Would you like fries with that?

Be more specific, then we might be able to help a bit better

What socket, & by combo, do you just mean CPU + mobo or what?

I don't like to question, but why would you switch from an Intel P4 3.0 GHz to what will basically be an equivalent A64, or at best, slightly better A64 ?

If it's cause of wanting to switch to PCI-e, then ah, okay.

In that case, why not an Opteron 144 & maybe the Asus A8R-MVP, or Epox 9NPA+ Ultra, or MSI Neo4...something like that?

the thing is your system is already good enough if your going to do anything with an upgrade i am going to say dual core + mobo. it's not worth going from your p4 to an AMD64.

Yeah, while P4s aren't quite as good at gaming, i see no reason to switch across unless you want an X2...

I would just get a really good cpu cooler and push that processor. The only thing that really makes a difference in games is the vga card, so if you get that p4 to over 3.6ghz you shouldn't have any bottlenecking with your 1900xt.

I don't see why u need an upgrade...ur system is fine IMO. Unless you like multitasking, get a dual core.

I agree with this as well..

For the amount of money you are looking to spend, you aren't really going to be upgrading, and you won't be able to use your DDR2 so you'll need new ram as well. What exactly is it that makes you think you need an upgrade?

lol yeah that's true, it will be more of a 300-400 $ upgrade. And regular DDR is a bit more pricier than DDR2 just FYI

There aren't any respectable OCing mobos for AMD X2 for 40-60 bucks that I know of.

Take the CPU back to Fry's (hopefully you didn't crack open the box yet) and wait till next year for the AMD socket AM2 platform. Then you can reuse your DDR2 RAM. Right now you're just wasting your money.
