Hello,

I just purchased an ECS K7S5A PRO mobo. I wanted to know what would be the best processor to OC'd. I'm thinking of either a XP 1700, XP 1800, XP 1900 or XP 2000?

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I would go with the 2400+. With luck and some skill you could get it to a 3200+.

Thanks for the suggetions guys, but I'm on a budget. I would love to get a XP 2400, but it's a little bit out of my price range. I don't want to spend no more than $60.00 on a CPU. I have read one time that the XP 1700 can be easily OC'd well beyond it's stock speed. Has anyone had any good luck with the 1700?

ECS K7S5A PRO has very limited OC options.
if you really want to OC you will need a mobo that offers some options to change fsb, multi, voltage.

the ECS is a nice board I have several of them, but it is NOT a OC friendly board.

My 1700+ has been running stable at 2.1G now for months. YMMV as I paid ~$46 delivered from NewEgg.

This is very old news however. Big thread here!

What FSB and multiplier settings are you using for the 1700?

Like they said ^^ ...the K7S5A, at least with the stock BIOS, is just not the right tool for the job if you want to OC. To OC, you need somewhere to OC to. The AthlonXPs use at least a 266MHz bus right out of the box, and that's the fastest that the K7S5A supports... no jumping to a 333MHz or 400MHz bus is possible, and I don't think the PCI is clock-locked on SiS735, so trying for a 150MHz (DDR300) bus speed could result in Bad Things happening to your hard drive :Q

For a budget OC board, get a Shuttle AN35N Ultra. Or simply buy a 2400+ for your K7S5A Pro and call it good

Actually, Osage, his board has an option in the bios of a 333 fsb along with a 33mhz pci clock. So, I would recommend either the 1700 or 1800, since both have a fairly low multi compared to the 2100. But hey, why not see if your 2100 will do 333 fsb?

my bro has an old asus a7a266 mobo and it s performance greatly improved after a flash
new oveclocking options were available

having a option in the bios and actually being able to run with those options enabled are 2 very different things.

if you want to OC in any serious manner get a board built to do the job. just about any NF2 board from Asus,Abit,Epox,Shuttle, or Soltek.

as far as what cpu is best for OC if you can find a 1700+ Tbred B with the right stepping they are hard to beat. particularly if you can get it for close to the original price, say less than $50.00. I have a AXDA 1700 DLT3C JIUHB 0310 WPMW
that will do 2400mhz on just fair air cooling.

the 2500+ Bartons are a good choice too, unlocked if you can find 1. mine top out at 2400mhz too, but the extra cache makes a diff in overall performance.
