Shigurui - really violent, but good plot

Cowboy Bebop - classic

Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex - my favorite anime of all time

Paranoia Agent

The Melancholy of harhui suzumiya - the episodes are out of order so it make not make sense at first, but its really funny and well done.

Dot Hack Sign - best music in an anime I've heard, it goes really well with the show.

Full Metal Alchemist

Claymore - hot chicks wielding huge swords, I dont think more needs to be said

A Netflix subscription is a good way to try a bunch of different series legally.

AnimeOnDVD.com is a good place to read reviews on almost every US DVD that's been released.

RightStuf.com is a good place to buy anime. Almsot every week or two they have a deeply discounted sale on one studio/publisher, usually 40% off.

After renting to see if you like something, box sets are often much cheaper than single discs, especially thinkpak sets using half-as-thick disc cases.

Some anime I've enjoyed enough to recommend:

Movies:

Ghost in the Shell
Samurai X
Akira
Appleseed & Appleseed Ex Machina

Series:

Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Black Lagoon
Noir
Madlax

RahXephon
Zone of the Enders
Full Metal Panic
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Gundam Wing
Crest of the Stars / Banner of the Stars / Banner of the Stars II
Stellvia
Ergo Proxy
Bubblegum Crisis (original & 2040)
Black Heaven
Noein

Full Metal Alchemist
Hellsing
Trinity Blood
Witch Hunter Robin

Samurai Champloo
Jubei Chan the Ninja Girl

Read or Die "movie" (OVA) & TV series
Kino's Journey
Haibane Renmei

I don't understand.. why do you want to "get into" anime? If you saw something you liked, then get into that, but to want to get into anime just for the sake of getting into anime? You have some nerdy friends you want to fit in with?

Dammit, everybody's just naming all these typical teenager anime over and over again. You people do realize that stuff like Naruto and Bleach is made for kids in Japan? Here are a few more that are actually good:

GunGrave
Wolf's Rain
Monster (although a bit drawn out)

torpid

FLCL is the worst possible Anime to watch as your first anime. The entire series references other Anime and Anime cliches quite extensively.

You should really give some guidelines. Like what kind of genres are you into? I've heard death note is a good anime. It's not pure action like some other animes. Then you have DNA^2 which is more of a comedy/romance type of anime. If you're into cars I'd suggest Initial D! So yeah guidelines.

Actually I take that all back.

I recommend bible black.

I only had ~4 episodes to go.

If someone has already sugggested this then blah, but the first series that I've watched in full was Blood+. I liked it because I'm not big into the squishy stupid slapstick anime stuff that some shows get into. The art is amazing, very high in detail, not just big ball of poof for people. Also, it follows a plot that takes place in the real world. They travel from Tokyo to China through Russia and Europe, not some enchanted land or something.

Cliff's: Blood+

Yeah, i own the series. Pretty damn funny, but lets off at the end.

For movies I'd watch:
Appleseed
Appleseed Ex Machina
Porco Rosso
Ghost In the Shell

For series, I tend to like the strange ones:
Full Metal Panic
FMP: The Second Raid
Samurai Champloo
Those who Hunt Elves
GANTZ
Dual
Ghost In the Shell
Samurai Deeper Kyo and a few others.

Kenshin
Ranma 1/2
Cowboy Bebop

It really depends on your preferences. I haven't really gotten into anything new recently. I'm surprised nobody have mentioned Ranma1/2 though.

I "acquired" it... it was in English and I just turned it off. So I have no idea if it's good or not.

I recommend "School Days"

I accidentally watched a little bit of this when I meant to watch Today in Class 4-2 (I forgot the title lol). It seemed kind of decent and I'll probably watch it as school animes tend to be fun.

kenshin (first 2 arcs only)

The Amakusu Shougo arc was alright too. But once they got to the German Black Dragon Knights, I just stopped watching it (around episode 75-ish). But if you want good Kenshin stuff, just skip the opening and skip right to the Kyoto Arc. You'll skip some of the funny, goofy stuff, but you get straight into the serious fights against Shishio Makoto and the Juppongatana.

HELLSING (one of my favorite)

For the love of baby Jesus, do not watch the normal Hellsing anime. They completely slaughtered the manga to the point where only the first 5 or so episodes actually follow the story. If you want the real Hellsing experience, you should watch the new Hellsing OVA that's being released by Geneon. It's currently at Episode 4 and is progressing decently. It follows the manga for the most part as you'll get to see Alucard vs the Nazi battalion Millennium!

I'm ashamed to say, I actually got into Initial D as well.

Nothing wrong with that. I'm quite the avid Initial D fan (if you've read the scanlated manga, my username may look a tad bit familiar... hence why I'm a fan). The series uses eurobeat music which is quite good (in my opinion). I found the series to be a bit fun and light-hearted at the same time where as Wangan Midnight ( another famous racing series ) bored me to tears.

Naruto, once you get past the kiddy stuff in the beginning and get to the real intense parts.

It's too bad Kishimoto doesn't know what the hell he's doing anymore.

If you want a good series for now, "Gundam 00" is a great start.

What in God's name? NO Gundam fan would recommend Double-Zero. It's so fucking boring.

Peace Maker Kurogane is another one in the same historical Japan era. Fun to watch, lots of action.

PMK was kind of fun, but it got a bit weird at points. Don't mess with the pig .

Whenever the show finally stops. I hated being jerked around for 3 ep's per fight. I stopped after ep 60 or so.

Good luck waiting for that . Based on some crude in-the-head calculations, I'd say there's maybe 60-80 more episodes before they're caught up to the manga's current-as-of-today position. This is based on how bad the anime has been prolonging things in the past 5-10 episodes.

not sure. i only saw the first set of 19 eps. or so?
was bummed that they didn't develop some of the characters more (the priest for instance).

There's only 13 episodes of the TV series for Hellsing. Also, if you want to see more of Anderson (the priest from the Iscariot XIII organization), watch the new OVA.

I surprised no one has mentioned Bleach yet. I thought it was great. They hit a filler gap for a while, but last I saw they were back on track.

Bleach is alright at this point and they haven't gone completely south in the manga like Naruto has. I actually can't wait to go home and get the latest chapter (usually released on Fridays) to see what happens :Q!

Full Metal Panic is a good series. Season 1 was mediocre, season 2 had some of the best comedy, and season 3 had great action

Fumoffu was by far the best one. It's what the manga was like (hence why it was good)... the light-hearted, humorous type.

Yakitate Japan was cool (it's a comedy about breadmaking, so might not be for everyone ).

Yakitate is pretty good overall. I kind of stopped reading it at one point though... really need to pick it back up!

Ahh, it makes me sad that bleach was only mentioned twice, .

Bleach is one of my favorite Anime shows right now, the fight scenes and the witty banter are what makes the show.

One thing I tend to rate a manga/anime by is how easy it is for me to choose a "favorite character." Bleach is one of the few animes where I have absolutely no favorite character. The only one I remotely like is Nel ( *spoiler* especially when she goes back to her normal form  *spoiler* ). Although, I have gotten more into Byakuya after watching the series again (I never watched most of the Seireitei arc because I read that in the manga). His cocky attitude tends to amuse me, but he doesn't hold a dear place in me heart like Rock Lee does!

One Piece, it has everything...

My favorite shonen series of all time. Beats the pants off Bleach and Naruto and all those others by far. The series has almost every emotion you could ask for in it, but I highly recommend you do not watch the English version unless you want to hate the series.

It does have a great soundtrack . The World is one of my favorite songs from an OST along with Key of the Twilight. Naruto actually has a pretty good soundtrack as well as Prince of Tennis.
