I've used Malwarebytes Anti-Male ware and eset online scanner, both come up empty.

I was going to try SpyBot but it doesn't look like it's been updated in a while and it's not exactly easy to use.

Are there any other programs you guys can recommend?

Biggest problem I have is web browsing with FireFox seems really slow. I think it's a script issue, but I'm not sure. There aren't any security scanners for browsers is there?

I keep IE, Firefox, and chrome as browsers. Try all 3 and see if they are all slow.
This will get you started. This is the printout I supply to the relatives after I repair their Malware.
TDSSkiller and AdwCleaner supply a printout of removed/ corrected items. Read it to avoid those items.
******* 2016 Suggested General Virus/ Malware strategy ********

Download from www.bleepingcomputer.com if available there. Currently the safest site I know of.
TDSSKILLER
AdwCleaner
Rkill
Mbam

1. Use one and only one anti virus and keep it updated. MSE and Defender have become very limited. Some free ones are Bitdefender, Avira, AVG, Panda, and Avast. I have had excellent luck with Bitdefender free since 2014.
2.periodically or when there are problems:
These cleaners will require reentering browser IDs and passwords.
a. run tdsskiller – this checks for rootkits and corrects - 3 minutes
b. run ADWcleaner- very fast and effective malware cleaner. scan/ select clean -5 or 10 minutes
3. If problems persist:
a. run rkill – it takes 2 or 3 minutes to start and 3 more to finish DO NOT REBOOT
b. when rkill finishes, run Malwarebytes a full scan and fix all - 1hour or so.

For anti-malware and not viruses try Mbam, Hitmanpro, Zemana Anti Malware. Those are the top 3 at the moment.

Thanks a ton for the great write up Jim. I'll take some time out on the weekend to run through all that.

What sites do you use to keep up on security? I tried googling what the 'best' anti-spyware programs are and pretty much came up with some ho hum lists of nothing.

Use caution looking up "best anti-spyware" is as not all answers will be good, but you have to start somewhere.
Currently Bleepingcomputer is a great place to lookup the malware the above programs named. They give removal advice by program name.

I use Hitman Pro, Malwarebytes, and ADW. I've never had any problems while using them so I haven't thought of looking for another.
