No, I wasn't saying anything of the sort. Nor is it a matter of being "naive." I'm disappointed that you would make such a dishonest misrepresentation of what I said.

As satisfying as it might be to debate you regarding whether or not there's a moral equivalency between Russia and the U.S., and why the respective countries have missiles pointed at others (which is the real issue), we both know that it will be a waste of time since neither of us is going to change the other's mind. And we could spend all night arguing back & forth & not even scratch the surface of such a complex topic. I'd prefer to discuss computers rather than politics.

For the record, my original comment was a result of kinda wishing such a good product wasn't being made in a country hostile to mine. I'd like to use it, but for ethical reasons choose not to. That's all. Let's not make a mountain out of a molehill here.
I don't want to get into an argument over this but disagree with your post,Russia is no more hostile then other countries,I won't meantion the other countries.

Buying an AV should have nothing to do with the country in question(there are good and bad people in all countries, its not the AV that is bad or even most of the people),I would buy an AV from Mars if I knew it was one of the best, anyway lets leave it at that and both disagree with each others opinions.

Getting back on topic I have always liked Kaspersky and Bitdefender products(too bad no Vista version available yet from Bitdefender) ,Anti-Vir has finally got a Vista x86 version out and have stated Q4 07 for the Vista x64 version.

I think a lot of people are waiting for the free AOL Active Virus Shield for Vista versions.

Tempted as I am to point out the inaccuracies in your reply, I agree it's best if we just agree to disagree.

I use a NAT router with avast anti virus (free). I use firefox for browsing and i run ad-aware about once every week or 2 and i have never had any problems with viruses or spy-ware in the last 1.5-2 years. If you visit a lot of risky sites on a regular basis im not sure my security level is high enough, but for the sites i go to and the activity i do it works out great.

For those who find such things interesting, here's a pic of a new DNSChanger variant's VirusTotal scan results: http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/mechBgon/VirusTotal_file_analysis_1.gif

The DNSChanger Trojan Horse sample wasn't detected by my own Kaspersky installation until I ran a manual update, so there's an example of why not to place excessive confidence in signature-based detection, not even if the signatures are updated hourly. It's still just a reactive type of protection.

So in the event that the computer was being used by a less-savvy person (roommate, guest, sibling, whomever), and their common sense didn't tell them not to download & run the Trojan, what would your computer's next layer of defense be? Or if an as-yet-unknown zero-day exploit were launching the Trojan under your account?

That's pretty cool. Interesting that F-Secure, Kaspersky, NOD32, Bit Defender and The Hacker (never heard of that last one before) were the only programs to catch it.

Yep. Hence the need for not only rapid signature updates, but also excellent heuristics capabilities.

I noticed with my Zone Alarm on, I ALWAYS lag in my games. I turn game mode on but it still lags, but when I turn zone alarm off, then it goes back to normal. Any one know how to fix this?

Yeah... you get to keep control of your computer

Try disabling the ZA firewall and enabling the Windows Firewall (making an exception so your game is allowed through the firewall). Does it lag with the Windows Firewall?

What game are you playing? I play Madden 07 online game behind ZA Pro 7 sometimes it will not let me host game sometimes it let me host a game but most of the time I had to disable ZA so I can host but I don't see any noticable lags even though the other players I was hosting seems to lagging.

I use to use the windows firewall, and it does not lag with Windows Firewall. I noticed when surfing the net, the pages either don't load or loads slowly. I assume it has something to do with ZA. Btw, my dsl never drops.

Hey, thanks for your reply. I play warcraft III - Dota and I always host games. Lately since ZA has been installed, i randomly get lag and spikes. After I turn off the ZA firewall, it's perfectly normal. As you said, you turn off ZA to host games, which is probably why you never experienced the lag. If you try to host with the ZA firewall or play, maybe you might get the same problem as me.

edit: I've done some googling and some people have the same problem as I do but seems to be no resolve. Wow, I am trying to download drivers from logitech and because of Zone Alarm, it's making it take so long to start 1 download.

Does anyone have any info on the problems with Kaspersky IS 6.0 with vista? I was planning on running it for xp and vista on my new build...

but i have read posts from other users that kaspersky IS is no good for a 24/7 computer (that and vista is pretty much out of the question) and generally i leave mine on until something craps and i am forced to restart, generally about a week or so. I have norton IS 2007, kaspersky IS 6.0, Panda 2007 IS and Mcafee IS 2007 to choose from.

Are any of those ok in xp and not in Vista other than KS? Which one would be best in vista? which one is the best in xp?

(sorry bx510 I don't mean to hijack your thread... hopefully you might find any replies relevant)

I know people are very passionate about their AV utility, but I don't care as long as I don't get viruses and it stays out of my way. I used ZA for many years but got tired of the crashes and popups (and interference with gaming.) When I heard Norton IS 2007 (I can hear the collective groan already) wouldn't ask permission for anything, I gave it a try. I have to say, I really like it. I don't do anything, it sets all permissions and my system runs at a speed no different that I can tell from when I had ZA. No popups, no questions. I do have one minor issue though.

Every Friday at 8pm it starts running an AV scan, but the scheduler is empty in the options. Anyone have any ideas on how to disable this?

I guess that a good way to check if an IS utility is vista compatible is to try to find a vista patch on thier site... I know that norton2007 and mcafee2007 are because they do, but I cant find anything on panda's site, almost every freaking link takes you to a "buy it!" page and kaspersky seems to have problems...

anyone have any more info on kaspersky and panda?
anyone know if the problems in vista with kaspersky affect everyone or just some?
