Best AntiVirus program?

I've heard many different storries regarding this? What do you think is the best AntiVirus program for keeping your system safe and uses the least system resources (doesn't slow your system down noticably)? If you think Norton is the best, is NAV 2004 a significant improvement over NAV 2003?

i use the web-based housecall thingy here
i run it like once a week (or when i get something suspicious more often).

good thing no problems with system ressources. it's always updated and as i don't use outlook mail-stuff (almost only web-based or lotus notes-mail) i also don't have much of the risc with worms and stuff.

but i would recommend it only if you're using a firewall to secure your internet-connection to block malicious attacts (so no need for 24/7 virus-protection)

At Comdex, Computer Associates announced they are offering their corporate AV/firewall software for free to home users: CA offers free antivirus, firewall software, along with a year of updates.

Symantec's stock went down over 7% after the announcement.

We use Eztrust at work and it works greats and seems to take up minimum system resources. I just DL'ed the latest version last night for my personal system and plan on taking advantage of the free one-year of updates.

It is. I read somewhere that its just a rebadged zonealarm pro as the firewall, and an updated version of CAs old InnoculateIT as the AV. Which is fine by me - I used InnoculateIT for a couple of years and thought it was great. So I'm giving eztrust a go for a couple of months

symantec av corp edition kicks ass, plus uses min resources, cooped with a sygate firewall pro and i got myself a system that boots up and ready to go only using 90ram with win xp pro sp1 almost sp2 configured for gaming

Link19 after running into a few issues years ago w/ McAfee software, I went to Norton A/V and haven't looked back.

NAV 2004 is the way to go IMO

My NAV 2002 subscription just ran out. I skipped NAV2003 because people mentioned a few things that had changed from NAV2002 that they (and I) didn't like. Can't remember specifics now. Took over the system more maybe. BTW, there is, or at least last year there was, someone on here that works for the Symantec NAV division. I believe he said NAV2004 would fix those 'problems'. Anyone know more? Amazon reviews aren't too good, for what they're worth. Also it requires activation. Yuck.

I used InnoculateIT when it was free then they stopped the free version. Why is it back now? Seems it was one of the best.

AVG no longer has a free version, do they? At least not w/ 7.x. Seems now it's just a 30 day trial version.

I had Symantec NSW 2001 and skipped 2002 since I got by without needing another subscription. Got NSW 2003 recently and was kind of disappointed in the installation options and wound up just installing NAV and Ghost. Since Winfax isn't included in NSW 2003, I installed it from the 2001 disk and it's a separate program, not run from NSW anymore, big deal. I did have fits installing NAV 2003, but once I sorted out my problem and got it installed and running, everything ran fine. It's also doing automatic virus updates, so it's very transparent. I think it is a good idea to have AV software running in the background, because you never know what will happen. I run Zonealarm free version too, but I don't think it's enough protection. You could get an alert you misinterpret and bingo, you're screwed. On top of that stuff, I've found it necessary to run Adaware and Spybot occasionally and today I installed Google Toolbar, enabling popup protection, another freebie.

I used to use Zonealarm but have been just using WinXP's firewall for a couple years with no problems. If you use some other browsers besides IE, you don't need an external pop up disabler. And I don't install anything with adware.

I've been using eTrust since the inoculateIT days. I was grandfathered in from when it was still free and only have to pay $10/yr for the updates. It runs efficiently in the background. New version has cool feature... right-click on the system tray icon and "snooze realtime protection" for quick temporary disabling when installing software. I have taken advantage of the free offer to get the FW which is indeed ZA Pro rebagged since I am on a dial-up these days.

I also have AVG installed and use it to run complete checks and to scan downloads before openning them. I have two AV programs in case one finds a nasty that the other misses.

NAV - for my main machine.

I use NAV 2003 and setup correctly, is not a hog at all. With all the sales running for the holidays, you can pick it up (2004) free after rebates.


BTW - I would never trust a CA AV product. Have been dealing with them for over 2 years with Unicenter TNG and they have done everything to ensure that no CA product enters my house.....

Nav 2004 is hit or miss... It either works perfectly or pins the CPU at 100% usage.

Baloney!!! AVG IS still free -- I've installed the free version on 3 different computers this week. All fresh downloads from here.

I've seen AVG catch viruses that BOTH NAV and McAfee missed. I've never been infected using AVG, but have gotten bit by both of the others... The key is to keep it updated and to surf safely
