Norton Antivirus. Not that stupid Norton Utilities pos, but just plain antivirus. Especially if you're smart and run liveupdate every so often

The Norton programs are all excellent...you just have to do a custom setup and also streamline all the startup applications all the Norton products enable.

I have plenty of hands on experience with Symantec's Norton Antivirus and McAfee. McAfee seems to take significantly less CPU utilization but it lacks in actually detecting viruses (especially unknown viruses).

I recommend running a search in the Hot deals forum...you can find OEM Norton SystemWorks 2001 Pro (newest version WITH GHOST) for $25 I believe it is.

Hey, I couldn't pass up that last post.....

Should have said "What do you use your computer for?"

If your only playing games, you don't need anti-virus software.

If you use it for work or personal finances, Adaptec CD Rom Burner software and
of course a CD ROM Burner/CDRW.

Norton, don't know. Anti-virus software has to be constantly updated and is not a sure thing. My PeeCees are for gaming. Formatting is painless. Restores lost disk space.
And speeds up my computer because I load less junk @ startup.

Also, what programs to you run. Or to put it another way, if you don't download from the Internet, if you only use named brand software, you probraby will never have a problem.

I like McAfee. I had norton and I STILL got jacked by the ripper virus. It was a classic virus and it was a few years ago, but it was Mcafee that cleaned it NOT norton.

In my experience, McAfee is as good at *finding* viruses as Norton. They both do an excellent job of finding. But cleaning? Jeez, McAfee cant clean its own a$$. Norton always cleaned the virus out, McAfee hardly ever did for me....

sak,
Innoculate WAS free but you can continue to get dat file updates if you are currently registered for as long as you have IT on your hard drive.
At www1.e-trust.com you can get a demo version of Innoculate and it's only $19 for a year.
That's a lot cheaper than some of the others.

Had McAfee. Been there done that. Waste of money, HUGE file, conflicts with windows, software, etc. Nothing but trouble.

I HIGHLY recomend agaisnt running a virus scan in the background unless you dont know how to not open suspicious files, or have stupid family members.

Either install a virus scanner, turn it off, and open it up once in a while and run a scan, or do what I do (Use a crappy free virus scan). It scans suspicious files for me, and if I need to know anything about th virus I go to nai.com and look under the virus library.

Free online virus scanner

It works okay, and I dont have to worry about dat files and such.

Email worms are some of the most prevalent viruses out these days and NAV 2001 does a good job checking email's as they are being received. I dont know if other A/V proggies have implemented that or not yet but if not, that alone makes NAV 2001 worth the price of admission. It's already saved my butt a couple of times.

Norton "anything" is gameboy garbage. The Ginzu of software.
Ghost, utilities, AV...all bloated garbage.
Go look at Panda Platinum ...
Nortons' Dead Update updates about a week into the epidemic.
Yea.....like puttin' on a rubber 2 days later !!

Norton is fine. The automatic LiveUpdate is slow, but Norton puts out signature files twice a week. You just have to download them manually (most software sites list new sig file releases).

Norton's is my personal fav. The biggest disappointment is that their email protection will NOT cover @msn email addresses. I know....I should simply ditch the MSN account. But I've had this one for nearly 6 years now. But I'm not about to pay the extra $40 just to have Norton cover my MSN email. Freakin' ridiculous...

But as I said before, if you are smart you dont need an always on virus scanner.

If you get an email with a .vml or .exe type attachment, don't open it duh. Its not that hard folks.

Why do people worry so much about virus scanners? Blah blah 2 ounces of trolling are better than 1 ounce of prevention.
