You should have SSL scanning as part of your AV. Many vectors are using SSL to bypass simple web-scanning to deliver payloads these days!

The best anti-virus is between your ears. If you think about it, the vehicles for viruses these days are commonly e-mail and fake Adobe/Java update pages. Use plug-ins like uBlock and NoScript, don't try to update anything through browsers, don't install toolbars, and don't open strange e-mail attachments. Unhide file extensions and never open EXE, SCR, CMD/BAT files from uncertain sources. An ounce of prevention is worth a lifetime subscription of anti-virus. The rest of the time when you suspect something is wrong, Adwcleaner and Malwarebytes will take care of it.
