Best Athlon XP Heatsink/Fan

I need to purchase a Heatsink for a new XP i got. What do you guys consider the best heatsink out there?

I was looking at the Volcano 7+ and the AX-7 with YS Tech 80mm Rheo Fan.

Maybe theres a better Alpha heatsink? Just wondering what you guys thought. Let me know ASAP so i can order today!

well it's nice, but it also cost double (and over in some cases) what the other solutions cost, and the performance isn't much better (definately not work $70)

I love my alpha PAL 8045, the 80mm fan make sit a WHOLE lot quieter! I use one of those new magnetic bering panaflos

and it cheaper than some of the others

the Alpha is a nice chunk of change, but is probably the best heatsink out on the market right now. If I was you, i'd sacrafice some of that noise for the sk-6 w/ the thermalright 31 cfm fan, unless your ears can handle the delta. The heatsink is pure copper, and is $21 at newegg w/out a fan.

Swiftech's MCX462/478 are, bar none, "the best". PAL8045 is good, but it doesn't measure up to the Swiftech.

I would go with the Thermaltake AX-7, kinda like the SK-6 but with a 80mm fan so it's quieter.

EDIT: Plus it won't cost you an arm and a leg.

Thermaltake AX-7, Thermaltake slk600 (improved version of the sk-6), alpha PAL 8045, and the big swiftecht cooler are the current top dogs. Overclockers.com currently ranks the ax-7 as the top heatsink above the alpha and swiftecht and once the slk600 is released it may replace the ax-7 as the top performer.

Oooh, haven't heard anything about the SLK600 (sounds like Mercedes Benz rather then a HSF), thanks for the info, I'll have to keep an eye out for that one.

Actually, just looked at the specs on the SLK-600 and it still uses a 60mm fan, which is a definite mark against it if you're concerned about noise.

AX-7, performs as well as the Alpha and Swiftech's, half the price. Choose whatever 80mm fan you want depending on the performance/noise ratio you want.

ThermalRight AX-7. It, the Swiftech MCXC462 and the ALpha PAL8045 are pretty much neck and neck. The AX-7 is a better choice for several reasons: it costs a lot less than the other two (although the Alpha isnt that bad) and it uses a standard clip to mount; it does not require that you disassemble your motherboard to install it. The clip it uses also utilizes all three cleats on the socket, so its very sturdy, even if it doesnt mount directly to the motherboard.

I'm torn between the AX-7 & PAL 8045. The delta's dont bother me cause i already have 4 case fans and i use an SK6 w/ a Delta on my other 1800+. Money really doesnt matter, but theres no point in dropping $70 on a mcx 478, when i can get the same results for half the price.

If I disassemble my motherboard will it still be covered under warranty?

The Alpha and the Swiftech mount using the 4 holes around your processor socket. You have to take out the motherboard to install either assuming your case doesn't let you remove the other side panel. The AX-7 uses clips so you do not have to take it out.

bozo1 - thanks for clearing that up. I'm going to go with the AX-7. It seems for the performance and ease of use it's the best overall factor. Hook it up with a nice high CFM and sounds like a winner.

2cooltek sells a kit that has an "adjustable YS Tech 80mm fan. The fan flows up to 48.7cfm, or can be dialed down to a whisper" Anyone had experience with this fan? Sounds sweet!

FWIW, I swapped my SK6's w/80mm 42CFM Sunon fans to AX-7's using the same fans last nite. Temps dropped about 8 degrees. Best part is they only go up 2-degrees under load. Before, I jumped about 6-8 from idle to load. It's cooled off here so I'll have to wait until the hot weather returns to see if my results stay the same.

Who said the Swiftech is guaranteed compatible? There are *many motherboards that have components too close to the socket for that HSF to fit.
