A friend of mine wants to buy a $250 video card for his new system. I told him to go with 9800 np (oem saphire in newegg) a few days ago. However, right now with the 9800 np gone (at least in newegg), what's the next best card to get ? a 9700 pro? or he should still wait for 9800 np to show up?

A 9700 pro will perform about the same at stock speeds, though you may have more room for improvment through overclocking etc. with the 9800np. If you're going to try and get one at newegg you'll have to check regularly probably. They had some this morning but they went quick. You could also get a 9800 pro for about $300.

I think i will probably ask him to wait for a couple of days for 9800 np before he goes for the 9700 pro. Where can you get a 9800pro version for $300? Edit : forgot to ask where can you get a 9700pro from a reputable dealer (seems like newegg doen't have new ones anymore) ??

By the way, what's the warranty period for OEM video card and any other good brand of ati products besides saphire and Built by Ati ? what brand to avoid (i don't know because i have never owned an ati card.)

what do you mean by "Never mind model was crippled version of 9800 "??

appreciate your input.

If you look around pricewatch you should be able to find a 9800np. Just look-out for the 9800?s under $250 --- as they are probably 9800SE?s (which you don?t want). Check the specks carefully.

Any brand of 9800NP should be good as I believe they all follow the reference design.

Best buy had the 9800 pro's for $300, that deal might be dead though. Newegg has them for $306 though. You might be able to find them cheaper than that too, as I haven't really looked around much.

If you're looking for a $300 9800 Pro, check out Pricewatch. There are several companies selling them for about $295, such as this one. No, I don't work for them, it was the first link that came up in Pricewatch. They appear to be the Built By ATI cards, not an aftermarket manufacturer, and they're all OEM packages so nothing fancy. If that doesn't bother you, it's a good deal.
