Failure - enough said.

SELF - Matt Mahaffee was a one man band like Trent Reznor. Self had some brilliant albums, but never got any love outside of Nashville/The Boro. Matt went on to play guitar in Beck and then Wired All Wrong, with God Lives Underwater member Jeff Turzo. Matt also wrote a song for the Shrek soundtrack. His songs have been used in expedia and other commercials. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self_%28band%29

Matt also wrote an entire album using ONLY childrens toys. It's a amazing album. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gizmodgery

I just pulled out my GLU - Empty cd from high school days. Damn it is still one of the best albums. Their followup was good as well but I prefer the guitar forward approach in Empty.

Another great band was Screaming Trees but they were definitely more mainstream.

Empty and their self-titled EP were both great albums. I love the heavier guitars on those albums also.

GLU actually released their last CD (Up Off the Floor) in 2004. The lead singer David Reilly died in 2005 from complications of a coma brought on by a bleeding tooth!?!?!? Crazy. He had some solo music that was really good also.

Hum's Downward is Heavenward is one of the best albums released in the 90's

there's countless amazing modern metal bands, but at best they'll never make it on commercial radio: Byzantine, The Human Abstract, The Faceless, Sikth, etc...

2nds for Glassjaw, Failure, and Cave-in

My favorite band is Brand New, they had a music video out once not any airplay that I recall, alternative rock mostly with some other parts to them.

I thought I'd read they broke up after Life in the So-Called Space Age.

All good bands, I have seen Sunset Rubdown twice now. Last year at the opening party for the pitchfork festival and this past thursday when they played at the black cat in DC.
They are great.

I liked InHouse which my friend was the drummer for...but they disbanded when the twin lead sisters got married and moved on.

Opened for Lillith Fair and a couple other acts in my area.

Seconded.

Are you guys serious? Everyone listens to them, they're practically icons in Sweden. Look at their last.fm, they have 18 million plays . Even if it isn't as big here, they have a significant cult following and almost anyone who follows any sort of non commercialized music will know their work very well. Not that this is bad, its the same with many of my favorite artists like Pavement or some of the newer folk. I don't think stuff like Sunset Rubdown (Come on, its Spencer Krug), Andrew Bird, Iron & Wine apply either. All of these artists have huge followings, sell out shows, and have been tirelessly written about.

Some More from me:
Marissa Nadler
Meat Puppets
Black Lips
Silkworm

As sad as it is, not many wolf parade fans know of all the side acts their members have. Hell, only a few know about fifth of seven (Oh, what a brilliant album and it's been out for two years!)

Subtle

Live Performance

Music Video 1

Music Video 2

Subtle has a couple of members of the underground hip hop group (Dose One and Jel) along with a cello player, drums, keyboard, horns, live drum machine pa. Really unique and awesome sounding stuff. Hard to define them, but I love it.

Back in the 1975 Gabrie Bondage had a great sounding album called Angel Dust. I still have it and play it occasionally.

animal collective has surpassed being unknown. i saw them a few weeks ago at a sold out show with about 1200 people in attendance (surprisingly young crowd at that)

I would consider AC less well known than either andrew bird or the black keys. They are starting to skew younger, though.

Get yo'self some Sirius, and tune it to channel 26, son (ifyouhaventalready).

Editors & The National are too well known for this thread. Both good bands though.

WAFFLEIRONHEAD - What was that smoking popes song that got some airplay? Was it "I need you around?" Good f'in tune. Oldie, but good. I was kinda listenin to Catherine Wheel & maybe Toadies back then & they all run together in my head.

Al's Not Well put out a great album. Then apparently something happened with the lead singer/songwriter, everybody else formed another band called All Is Well, which didn't work out, so they became 10sheen, which didn't work out, and I guess now they're Music Is a Weapon.

Yes it was. I saw the Popes for free this past summer at a city festival, good show, good band.

Yes! I'm surprised they haven't achieved the same recognition as bands like Wolf Parade or Arcade Fire. They're simply great. I saw them perform about a week ago in Houston and they were kick ass!

Dubb: You've really got to listen to the new album again, especially John Allyn Smith Sails and their bonus track "Starry Stairs" (found online).

Btw, it's Okkervil River (only one 'L')

Y'all can stream the full album at their official website.
