Best bang for buck AGP

The ATI Radeon x700 Pro in one of my computers just died.

I'm looking for recommendations for a replacement. I'm looking for at least some step up in performance, but don't want to pay more than about $60 for it. I'm willing to shop on eBay for a used AGP card.

What's my best bang for the buck?

they don't make agp cards anymore so some of the fast ones sell for more than new cards on eBay i.e. 7950gt 512MB AGP $150 or more

I personally own a 7800gs 256MB AGP and i see them go for about $130

i see 6600gt 128MB AGP go for about $30 used.

If your shopping new your best best is the Radeon HD 2000 or 3000 series which will give you directX 10. If you can afford it i think this is the fastest AGP card ever made

ATI has some hit-or-miss driver glitches with its newer HD 2xxx and 3xxx AGP parts, and older motherboard BIOS may play a role as well. For an older motherboard that may not have received a BIOS in a couple years, I would tend to stay with like-period solutions such as Radeon X800 Series, X1600 Series, X1900 Series, or GeForce 7600/7800/7900.

Some used candidates that would be a good step-up (not necessarily in any order of performance):

- X800 XL, X850 PRO
- X1650 PRO or GT
- X1950 PRO or GT
- GF 7600 GT

I avoided Radeon XT and XTX parts because these are typically clocked to the practical limit and may tax your PSU. Try to find board configurations that use G-DDR3 rather than G-DDR2. Some parts take a fairly significant performance hit with slower G-DDR2, though at the level of X1950 and GF7600, it would still be a big improvement over R700 PRO.

I have an X800XL that I'd ship to you for $50. Keep telling my wife that, yes, I'll get rid of some of my older stuff anyway.

nVIDIA is the only company trying to totally ignore AGP. They made enough 6*** chips for AGP, however, that there really is still quite a good supply of those, NIB, in the retail pipeline, right now. Their few "fast" cards similar to the 7800GS / 7900GS were made in limited numbers and EoL'd early. Their latest AGP offering is the 8500 GT, a puny thing.

AMD keeps on supplying a fast AGP card for the diehards, at a relatively reasonable cost, and if they haven't yet released an HD 4850 for AGP, it surprises me.

However, when it comes to the really silly limit that the OP has set on the purchase, there isn't much available new that qualifies. At his price, new, there probably isn't going to be anything that is anywhere close to the performance level of the X700 !

too bad .. i didn't want to pay $2000 this week for my own upgrades - either

i dunno .. what is the rest of your system like and what are you going to use it for and at what resolution?

if you are a gamer, then you need to budget more than $60 imo
- maybe a used 7800/7900 or 1800/1900 series
