There are no consumer grade fireproof safes on the market, they are only fire resistant. You'll have to get into the realm of commercial safes to get anything fireproof.

Sounds like you need a UL listed Media safe, rated as UL Class 125. Most fire resistant safes are UL Class 350, meaning the safe won't allow an internal temp greater than 350F over its rated number of hours exposure to test temps of 1700F or greater. UL Class 125 safes, commonly known as media safes, are rated for not allowing the interior to go above 125F when exposed to external temps of 1700F or greater.

As well as temp resistance, there is the time rating. A UL Class 125 can have an exposure time rating of 1 hr, 2 hr, 3 hr or longer...but they'll get progressively heavier and more expensive.

Decent explanation here:

Cheaper to update insurance inventory or upgrade coverage.

Y'all keeping passports, social security card, birth certificate, etc. in a drawer?

I've been contemplating getting a fire safe of some sort. Not sure where I'd hide it, so although it doesn't have to be a bank vault just the fact that it looks like something that would have valuables in it means it should be somewhat secure.

Seriously people few months ago my neighbors house burned down in a huge fire from a lighting strike. I need a fireproof safe god forbid my valuable items get burned from fire damage. Who knows of a fire proof safe that is the most durable secure for the money?

I'm pretty sure you've already received answers.

Last time I checked, a decent sized fire resistant safe with 1 hr rating was around $350. There's almost no such thing as a "fire proof" safe, so you'll need to balance the rating vs the cost and the importance of the documents/media/etc.

As others have said, the best thing you can do is have multiple copies of everything and store a copy off-site.

no personal use, but meets the ul125 for 1 hour. probably not what you're looking for though. you've probably seen many of the cheap and crappy fire safes in Lowes or Home Depot. they might save some paper in a small hose fire, but media is different, paper can handle a lot more heat before charring or burning.

Can say much about the actual security aspect. but with all safes, bolt it to the floor and/or wall and try to position it where pry bars can't easily be wedged in the door gap.

Is there a fireprooof safe that has excellent protection for reasonable price?

Not that i'm aware. not for media. I used to think the junk sold in Lowes and such were ok. for paper and small fires, they may be fine. but not media and defiantly not security. the internal temp will likely get too high and cause the media to warp or melt. I looked more at the one i linked and i really don't think security is a strong point for it. Much like a fire resistant file cabinet we have at work . Its very heavy but the locks are the same ones on a cheap file cabinet. Part of the cost is the material but another big part is the cost of the UL certification process.

I'm no expert, but i started looking into this when i started looking for a good gunsafe. you have to factor in what you want it to do. trying to protect media is the hard part due to the temperature at which it starts to get damaged.

What have you found so far and why haven't you purchased one of them?

I simply want to protect my blu Ray discs from fire. The discs have my important files on there.
Seriously. Give up on your quest and make a duplicate of your discs and put them in a friends house. It's not rocket science.

Well, if that option is on the table too, if you have a bank account, see if they offer a discount or free small safety deposit box. It's helpful.

Your work drawer.

Seriously, that's where I take my offsite backups. At work. I used to have a PO box, but the issue is they did not have any kind of option for auto pay, so it was a hassle and source of stress having to remember to go pay for it every 6 months. I hate anything I have to pay manually. I want the payment to just come out so I don't have to worry about being late etc. So got rid of that idea and just bring my backups at work now. I also have some offsites that run nightly to my web server.

Though I never considered stuff like passport and birth certificate, or SSN card for that matter... those just sit in a drawer, suppose that is not the smartest thing to do. The amount of pain it would be to get all those things back... I don't even want to think about it. Especially considering you need one to get the other. You may as well be an illegal immigrant to your own country without those documents. Is there even anything that can be done if you were to lose those? Like can they test your DNA or something to prove your identity and then produce new ones? I imagine it would be a huge and expensive ordeal to go through.

SSN card...at least in US you can easily obtain another. How could a blood test prove your identity? The government has no record of that unless you've been incarcerated or something.

Birth Certificate is held by the county clerk...I simply walked in and produced my driver's license and had a copy within 5 minutes.

The passport is the most painful since you have to do it in person and there's always a line.

Completely side issue...the wife has her DL 1st, maiden name, married. Passport 1st, middle name, married. Before she flew to Israel in April, there was a question that she was the same person. Talked with my neighbor, lawyer, said we could spend $5K to get both the same because you get one (1) "freebie" when you get married. eff that. She just uses her passport if it's national and international.

And +1 for S.C. dmv. "Temporarily" lost my wallet and I was out under 15min with a copy of my DL.
