If you think your backup tapes (do you really use tape today?!), usb sticks, microSD, etc. will survive in a doc safe try this.
Toss them in your oven, open a window, set temp to 340 freedom degrees, timer for an hour and let 'em bake.

Tell me how it goes, that is, getting your files back.

Thought so!

A media safe is gonna work but it ain't cheap. If you really have something you value and are too scared to put in the cloud I suggest renting a safe deposit box at your local bank that offers this service.

I simply want to protect my blu Ray discs from fire. The discs have my important files on there.
That's it? Keep another copy in bank safe deposit. Can't believe no one has suggested that. And/or "the cloud."

A safe... to protect easily duplicated items from fire? Yeah. People have already told you the correct answer.

By the way, crashplan for one PC is only about $60 per year, and you can upload all you want with your own encryption key that they don't have. Have at it, and toss this silly idea of a fireproof safe.

What are these "important files" that you are storing on BLU-RAY DISCS for some ridiculous reason?

er. i did mr. banana slicer. Which reminds me. I need to take advantage of the free box offering my bank offers with my account to store some encryption keys and some other small stuff.

Well, if that option is on the table too, if you have a bank account, see if they offer a discount or free small safety deposit box. It's helpful.

Still need assistance deciding which fireproof safe to buy for my blu ray discs. Bank safe deposit box sounds like good idea but I would like to access my safe at any time.

Why are you not just encrypting the files and storing them on multiple cloud servers?

I'm aware of online backup in cloud. Me personally I would rather backup my important files locally or offline.
Why not both?

I do both but I bet the offsite stuff hosted by the big companies is way better protected from fire, flood or alien invasion than anything that I could afford to put together at home.
If you want safe then multiple off site backups seems the best option.

I still can't get past this. Maybe he's just trolling? Who backs up data to BRDs in the days of cheap portable flash storage, encryption, 2FA, cloud storage, etc. Doesn't make a whole lotta sense.

I read somewhere that flash actually has poor data retention so it's probably not good for long term storage. The data retention is increased by storing in cold temperatures though.

If you're hardcore, LTO tapes are pretty good and worth looking into, but very expensive. A tape will run about $60, and the drives a couple grand. Though you can look on ebay for older generation stuff like LTO4. But problem with getting old gear like that, you don't know how long you'll be able to get the tapes for. Or the drives for that matter, if your drive fails or is destroyed in a fire you want to be able to just buy another one to retrieve the data from all your tapes.

As for safe, I would store it outside the house, or in some kind of concrete insulated box of sorts. The concrete will provide more time before the heat gets to the safe.

IMO simplest bet is a hard drive dock, hard drives, and a bank lock box.

What the hell man? I'm not trolling. You sound like a douche bag accusing me of trolling. Blu ray discs is best backup method period. The next best backup method would be in the cloud.

I found this safe but I read that this isn't the best safe for security. Someone said a person could easily open this safe with a pry bar Someone said they found a better safe at lowes for lower price I wonder what specific safe at lowes though?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014VD3918/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=I12JPWK6V0L2LV&colid=3UTJPA75JFSQL

ANY safe you buy at lowes or your average big box type store can easily be opened with either a prybar or sawzall. (or picked up and carried away if you don't bolt it to the floor/wall) They are, from what i remember, not well rated at fire resistance. At best it's for paper only. meaning the internal temp is tested for x amount of time and can get up to around 350. and usually the x time is short if they actually got it tested. Not to forget the tests times don't always, maybe usually, don't include the cool down time after the fire is out.

I'm sorry, but there is no way around real fire protection for MEDIA and security that isn't going to cost you a couple or few thousand dollars for your own personal use. Even the safe i linked to is really only meant to protect from the fire. It relies on you putting it in a secure place.

To even try and put this into perspective. take a blu-ray disk that you've used for a backup. place it on a sheet of aluminum foil in a toaster oven. heat it to only 250 degrees for 20 -30 minutes. turn off the oven and let it cool. take the disk out and see if it is still usable. Oh, i'm recommending a toaster oven so you can set it outside. If you don't like the idea of the foil, try a piece of wood. it shouldn't burn at that temp.

Well I'm quite disappointed.
It seems impossible to fireproof electronics such as blu ray discs. Blu ray discs can't withstand fire at high temperatures

You didn't acknowledge the pallet of bricks. You could build a safe that would be better at attenuating heat than any consumer level safe, and just look like a stack of bricks in the basement, so no one would be inclined to look for your stuff.

Unless you're suggesting a cheap fire resistant safe be placed inside a pallet of bricks, this will be a bad idea unless maybe it's several pallets of bricks. You'd essentially be building a stone oven. it would insulate it for a little while, but once it heated up, it would stay hot for a while. even putting a safe inside a pallet of bricks wouldn't be good if it were somehow in a very big fire.
