Best Bang for the Buck Netbook?

I'm thinking about getting myself a netbook, primarily to watch movies "on the go" and use Skype (video and audio) in the office outside of the company VPN network or public wifi in airports/restaurants etc..

I might possibly hook the netbook up to a hotel TV (or even at home) from time to time to watch movies and (if possible) I'd be happy to see an HDMI port - although, this is not really necessary.

I'd like to buy something around the $200 mark but this is not cast in stone if the extra cost is a providing a worthy upgrade in performance or battery life.

I do like a hot deal as well, hence the lower starting price as a rough benchmark.

Any ideas?

for 250+ you can get a new atom

330+ you can get a c-50

or wait and see if you can get a core i3 or i5 sandy bridge ultra portable for 600+

Thanks for the suggestions - I'll certainly read a few reviews and keep my eye open.

The AMD processors sound promising.

I'm not fixed on $200 but happy to find a $300 netbook for that price of course

$200 will buy a refurbed single core Atom.

I'd at least aim for the $330 C-50.

The E-350 (I've seen it more at $450 for the HP dm1z) gets in the realm of a real road warrier. With anything less (single cores like most Atom netbooks) you WILL encounter times when you think to yourself "OMG this is so slooooooow."

Just noticed this tablet on offer over at SD which might be a solution - I'm not sure about tablets due to possible screen damage - I'd prefer the clamshell design at the end of he day.

Tablets are still more pleasure oriented then buisness and work oriented. And tablets still can't do movie streaming, skype, vpn, etc.

Yeah, $200 isn't going to get you much, especially if you are looking to watch movies on it. These days I would pony up the money for an e-350. Sure it's a bit more, but I think you can do a lot more on it.

depends, for movies are you planning on just watching it on the screen or hooking it up to a tv? a cheap atom should be fine for just watching on the screen, and hooked up to a tv i've heard they don't start to have problems until you go above 720p.

Same question. The netbook would be used for Netflix/Hulu, getting tabs for guitar, surfing, mail, etc.

Screen resolution would probably be a biggie (with the ability to rotate 90 degrees for PDF's, texts and other items).....
