I'm looking for the best bang for the the buck i5 or i7 chip that overclocks well. Price limit would be around $200 for the cpu and $100-$130 for the mobo. I've been building for years but I'm just not up to speed on the new chips. I'm not against buying used if the savings are there.

I built up an i5-4670k combo for my son a while back that clocked well. I think he paid about $330.00 for for deal. I'm just looking for the best performance I can get in that price range.

No Micro center near me but the links you provided look promising. What are people seeing for overclocks with the i5-4690K?

Overclocks well? Then still the old soldered 2500k/2600k. Can only pick up second hand now but would cost less as a result.

Anything 4670K can do 4690K can do better. It's the same chip with better power delivery and a better TIM under the IHS.

Depends if you're looking for high clocks, or overall performance.

For "best bang for buck" I would seek to purchase an i5 or i7 second hand, like for sale forums. Now is a time when a lot of people are moving up to Haswell-E and Skylake so plenty of Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge, and even Haswell chips should be showing up for sale soon. If you can get a used CPU/mobo combo that would be a pretty sweet bang/buck.

i5 2500K, i7 2600K/2700K, i5 3570K and i7 3770K, they overclock like crazy and often with decently low voltage (my i7 3770K was a silicon lottery, hit 4.5GHz with stock voltage, no adjustment whatsoever). Haswell and Broadwell take more effort to overclock.

If you're buying new, there's only one overclockable i5 and i7, basically. You buy the one with the "K" at the end, either i5 or i7, and get a motherboard with a "Z" in the chipset.

4690K is the older Haswell unlocked i5, which is $240. You can still find them on Newegg, but they've been replaced with the newer 6600K, which is $250. The 4690K pairs with Z97 chipsets, while the 6600K pairs with Z170 chipsets.

Best bang for the buck on the Intel side? For awhile there, it was the G3258, though now it looks like non-K Skylake parts may be bclk-overclockable. So I'm guessing a Skylake-based i3 would fit the bill.

Yeah hopefully the rumors are true. But maybe Intel would only limit BLCK overclocking with Z170 motherboards. Here's hoping we can buy an i3 + H110 and overclock those suckers.

Non-Z bclk overclocking would be fantastic. Voltage controls might be a bit "meh" as they were with Non-Z overclocking for the G3258 (on many boards anyway), but it'd still be fun and probably cheap.

Best bang for buck is i5 4590 with non-Z board with no overclocking.

OP wants to overclock.
