Have found a pretty good airfare out to Las Vegas - wife has never seen it or the Grand Canyon. Both of us would rather spend more money on shows and food than nicer accomodations, so we wanted to find a reasonably priced option that wasn't a completely terrible property. Right now, it looks like the Circus Circus, Stratosphere, Excalibur, New York New York, and MGM Grand seem to be likeliest candidates. Any experiences with these, or alternate suggestions?

Only one I've stayed at was Excalibur, and it was great. My aunt and her husband were pretty happy with it, as well.

Of those choices, NYNY. Best location (Well tied with MGM), nice rooms and not too huge. Not sure how much you plan on gambling, but they treat the low/mid roller pretty well.

Isn't the Paris hotel right next door too?

I was thinking about opening up a casino of my own called "The Bronx". The luggage handlers rob you, vallet steals your car, and you get stabbed at check-in. I think it will be a big hit.

best deal is to not stay at the strip and save the money for shows/entertainment elsewhere, but i don't know if you just want to stay on the strip for just the experience. Downtown Vegas can save you cash, and just taking the bus rather than taxi will be money saving as well.

MGM has some RIDICULOUSLY good deals right now

That said, I booked it @The Hotel; gangster ass suites and they are relatively cheap

After a little gap Planet Hollywood is north of the MGM, then Paris. I didn't mention Paris because OP didn't mention it, and I avoid Harrahs properties like the plague.

Imperial Palace. You're right there on the strip. Cheap. Pool is decent but you're right next to Flamingo and theirs is even better (yes you can use it). I liked it. There was also the added bonus of RollerCon being there at the same time I was...

I go to vegas a couple times a year at least for the past 7 years.

HANDS DOWN the best deals are on priceline.

check out
\betterbidding.com

for how to priceline bid, you can get a nice four star place (MGM, Planet Hollywood, etc) for like 50-60 bux a night.

then look at

front desk tip

for how to get low cost suite upgrades.

This is a surefire way to have a good time in vegas. Hope this helps.

You can't be serious: I was there for 20 minutes and I felt like I aged 20 years.

LOL.

I had a few try out the Luxor and it was ok. Far from the strip though, but remember, it's what you make of the trip that counts!

If I were stay anywhere in Vegas it would be first the Venetian, then the Bellagio, then maybe The Signature at MGM Grand.

Just came from Vegas last week (was attending a convention) and stayed at Excalibur. Its an alright hotel and I was satisfied but the staff never had a smile and were a bit rude sometimes. Also those resort(timeshare?) sales people are pushy (just try to avoid them).

If I was going to Vegas again, I would stay at Golden Nugget whenever I would have a car (nice hotel, cheap rooms, decent casino, cheap tables and nice waitresses when compared to other hotels in the same price range -- it is rated as 4-star property). This was the only decent hotel where we found $5 blackjack tables at ~10-11pm on a convention night (all other hotels on the strip were ~10-15 minimum and were packed)

Ballys has a perfect location, so see if you can get a decent room there. Imperial palace is getting too old and so is circus circus for cheap stays.

I don't see that as a good option since you can't find out what hotel you'll be staying at until AFTER you commit (unless, of course, your sole criteria is price)

Wrong. North strip 5 star on priceline = Venetian (if you get lucky Bellagio or Wynn). All are the wynn.

So, if by chance I get fucking shafted, is there anyway out?

Question cannot be answered - shafting no possible when choosing North strip 5 star.
