Best beach to go to within 40 miles of los angeles?

suggestions? i had a friend suggest san juan capistrano. catalina is a no no ($$$).

ZUMA BEACH, north of Malibu, many beaches that you don't even know are there, nor can see from the road. Just find parking north of ZUMA and go down the stairs if you find any

You can't surf on any of the beaches on the east side of Catalina and you can't get to the west end of the island easily without a boat...I don't know who the hell recommended Catalina but they don't know WTF they're talking about.

Huntington Beach is cool. I started surfing there and also in Hermosa Beach near the pier.

Stay away from Santa Monica though...too crowded and polluted.

BTW-Surf was fairly big yesterday with some nasty rips along San Diego beaches so if you're inexperienced I'd stay out of the surf until it backs down a bit.

Hermosa is a lot of fun for Body Boarding. If you're not familiar with rip tide, use it to get out faster and then swim parallel to the beach to get out of it. Then catch some decent waves from the outside.

I've never been up north of Malibu though so I'll try that out.

Huntington beach is pretty nice.

Huntington Beach, south side of the pier is friendly towards spongers in the summer.
But its crowded and bunch of snakers.


Balboa when the Wedge is going off.

Catalina? I never heard that was surft spot back in my old sponging days. Thats a new one.
