I heard bad things about geeksquad, are they really THAT bad, like in general? We just got a new future shop here and I've been thinking of outsourcing pc support to them since people always come to me with their computers. Bad idea?

That can be more expensive, you need a faster internet connection and VPN/Encryption. At least if it's hosted locally you don't need to depend on the internet.

Though for that type of business I would always keep a few spare servers just for cases like this.

It might also be an internal application in which case hosting externally can just be a pita when your internet services go down.

Please explain why getting his customer up and working the next day was a bad idea. His customer clearly didn't have a backup server so this seems to be the only available option. Remember that he caters to small businesses who likely don't have the capitol to really support the hardware he should have.

Didnt he say he lent them his own server until theirs was up and running? Best Buy is NEVER an option. Nor is building a server from parts for an office whose lifeblood in on their server like this guy's client seemed to be.

Why is that? Not every office server needs to be a $4K "server" with 16GB of RAM and 4 TBs of storage. Maybe the guy simply needed a small file server. In a case such as that, just about any desktop box could be made to suffice with the addition of a couple extra disks.

And you'd be right back fixing some other problem with it shortly there after. You can get a nice ~$999 Dell server within a few days. He could have just done that and let the client use his own server he lent them for a few days longer.
