Hello all, I am looking to upgrade and get a 4k setup going. Currently the rig has a i5-2400 in a xeon name. It has a gtx 1060 3g. I think I am still under step up so what is an nvidia option and or Amd option for the best buck?

Sounds like you want a GTX 1070. No card can play 4K without moderately reducing settings in most games. The $1200 Titan X comes close, but doesn't fit the term "budget". The 1080 doesn't have quite as good performance per dollar as the 1070 either.

A firesale GTX 980 Ti could also work, but with a newer architecture and more VRAM I'd favour the 1070 easily if they are similar price.

Best bang for the buck? Probably the Fury at Newegg for $259 - $20 rebate card.

It won't game at 4K as well as a 1080 but should be fine in most games at 4K as it trades blows with the 1070 and is $100+ less. Many Furys can also be unlocked to full Fury X performance.

Or if your ok with going crossfire or SLI then two RX 480s can game at 4K at 1080 levels of performance and can be had for around $200 a piece.

Fury is nice at that price, if he is willing to upgrade soon-ish. 4GB VRAM at 4K will limit it hard in the near future. 1070 otherwise!

OP didn't we have this discussion a couple of months ago, where a bunch of us specifically were advising you against getting the 1060 GimpEdition? If you still can step up, get rid of it asap, any GTX 1070 will do the trick in 4K with reduced detail settings.

The Fury is a damn solid card, and for 250$ is a steal for 1080p. While power hungry it can hold its own in 1440p/4K, but as f2bnp states, the 4GB framebuffer for 4K is stretching it!

Well as I stated step up would be prime. At the time I needed somthing on the cheap so that's why I chose it. But if Amd has a solid option then I may do that

Textures benefit the most from VRAM, and textures shine their best at 4K. It depends on the game where the Fury can max out Textures at 4K while reducing settings (fine in BF1 for now, for example), but it's not going to get more favourable moving forward as games get more demanding.

I think the Fury right now at that price definitely offers better performance per dollar, but it comes with that compromise that the 1070 never has to worry about (and the 1070 is a bit faster, even more so after OC, and uses less power). I'd say Fury is a solid choice at 4K if you simply cannot stretch the budget and view it as a compromise card.

How long are you planning on keeping this card? If it's a stop gap until you get a new system built for 4K it's one thing, but if you're going to have this for 3+ years it's another. Fury is good for the short term, but the 4GB memory limit is going to hurt it in the near future. 1070 is more future proof in that regard and while a 1080 is better we're starting to get away from budget territory in a hurry.

You don't pick 4k and expect to use budget parts like that.

You will also need to upgrade your cpu decently thus probably your motherboard and ram and if the computer is that outdated probably your power supply also.

1060 3gb will be a total turd for 4k. Fury will be solid since it scales very well with resolution, but like the others say, its days are numbered before you have to turn down texture settings. And I agree crisium, the higher your resolution gets the more you notice crappy textures. That being said, the Fury has held up remarkably well at 4k with the 4GB VRAM due to the driver tuning they do. Far better than anyone expected. How long that will last, I don't know. I would not be surprised if they slow the pace of memory driver development for Fiji once Vega drops.

Personally I would wait until 1080 Ti and Vega come out. Those will be the real 4k cards. They won't be cheap, but if you actually want to play 4k that's what it is gonna take.
