Stay away from the Celeron. You'd be much better off getting the Mobile XP or Sempron and overclocking it.

if you could pick up a Sempron 3100+ and a cheap 754 mobo, you would be muc better off than an AXP IMHO.

 Hint: Check the for sale forum here. I saw a couple cheap 754 boards in there today that would do ok in your scenario.

I'd really like to see some benchies on this issue between these two options.

Until somebody does them and I see some proof, I'll stay with the mobile as the best deal.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you're wrong. I'd just like to see this addressed. Just as I would a mobile @ 2.5ghz v. 3000 winnie skt 939

EDIT: Hah, that's funny. I just found a guy claiming to have a mobile clocked 2.6 over HERE. Says the XP got 19,700 in 3Mark01. His new winnie 3400 at stock got 20,300.

Semprons would be the best value. Avalon had a thread where he did a huge OC on a Sempron and it made a great differnece in performance.

For that much money, I'd get a S754 board and the highest Sempr0n you can get with the leftover money.

I use a Chaintech vnf3-250 board, and like it. The combo of that with a Sempr0n 2800+ is 146 +tax/shipping at mwave.com

The sempr0n 2800+ is essentially a Winchester core A64 with 64 bit extensions disabled and half the cache. Benchmarks seem to indicate that cache is not critical, but does cause some some performance hit. Because of the 8x multiplier limit, the motherboard "FSB" becomes a concern to overclocking. My Chaintech board seems to be able to do 300 MHz fine, but not all seem to be able to. 260-270 range should be easy and that gives in the 2200 MHz range.

That should be faster than an average AXP mobile overclock and have a better upgrade path (in that you can move to A64 without changing motherboard. Also AMD has hinted that 64 bit enabled Semprons will be out by year's end)

i just upgraded one kid pc from a 2.4ghz mobilexp to a 2.3ghz a64... with the same disks, memory, os, and 6800oc agp vid....

went from 51000 aquamark3's to 60000... hl runs smooth at 1600x1200 with everything on high, 2xaa/4xaniso, had to run medium to be smooth with axp...

not an amazing jump, but noticeable...

If you get a Socket 754 Sempr0n, make sure it's a 90nm chip(only relevant if you're getting a 3100+) and make sure to get one with 256k l2 cache. In other words, pick up the 2800+ or 3100+.

The best Overclocking Celeron is the CELEROn D 330J on non J.
The 330J is for 775 Platform Motherboards and the 330 non J is for mPGA Motherboards.
The celeron 330J is on 2.66 Ghz with A voltage of 1.33 Volts
to oveclock it to 4GHz you will need:

A motherboard like Abit AG8, DDR400 ram...or even better DDR 466 Ram and a cooler from Thermaltake like the Thermaltake Big Typhoon or Thermaltake Sonic Tower
You will need to overvoltage the Cpu at 1.47 Volts and set a DRAM ratio of Sugessted 1.1
if that doesnt work try 5.4
A litle overvotlege of the ram would hurt.....try to volt it at 2.6 or at your own risk 2.7
THATS IT

I take no responsbility if anything happens to any SYstem.... iJust give Advice.....i my self hace a Celeron and Will make it a 4GHZ celeron in a Week or So

For $160, there's no reason not to go a64. You should be able to get a used 754 combo with a a64 2800+ or 3000+ for that price. After some searching, you could probably get a 939 combo for that much.

I just bought a refurbed 939 Epox motherboard for $66 shipped and I've seen 939 3000+'s for as cheap as $90 used (although I bought a new venice core processor for $117 for the most overclocking potential).

Other than that, I'd get an AXP + motherboard for around $100 used. Doesn't have to be mobile - they all usually overclock very well.

Don't know anything about the celerons, so they may also be a good choice

i get 2.6 on air with a 3000, there isn't enough overclocking difference to justify the price difference
