All this 8x time is making me jealous. Come on, someone in here has to have an 851s? Anyone, anyone? Bueller, Bueller?

No need to be jealous, the 851S can burn the Ricoh's at 8x too.. There are plenty of hacked BIOS's available for this.

Does CC have Ricoh disks as well?

The ones I got @ CC were CMC Mag's and they're going back.... They burn ok but not as good as Ricohs by a long shot.

Can you give us more details on how the spindles looked? Trying to find a way to differentiate between the two in the store. I've heard the Ricoh's have a round top and gray or black base with 3 locks. The CMC's are usually black bottom with straight top and 5 or 6 locks?

Thanks!

Tom

I took the CMC's back to CC and PM'ed CompUSA to BB. The CMC spindles were black base with a large (half-dollar size) felt washer on top of spindle. The Ricoh's I got from CompUSA had the same black base but no felt washer.

The Ricoh's I got from BB have the black base and felt washer on top. Sounds like it's impossible to know what you've got until you get it home.

I just got back fron BB in Jacksonville, fl. I scored a pack of ricoh media. They had a dozen or so scattered around the store. All had a black bottom and the 6 tab base. The only thing that tipped me to possible ricoh media was the dummy disk on top. It had a "R7-4" stamped on it near the hole. Don't know if they all have it. Now I will try to ramp up my io-crap writer to 8x. works perfectly at 4x but 8x produces jerky movies. At least on CMC media. I hope this helps.

Just got back from CC, here's the scoop.

Found 2 different types.

Spindle 1 - Black base, frosted cover with a large white foam/felt washer on top. These are CMC's, and are going back.

Spindle 2 - Black base, clear cover with a small plastic washer. These are Ricoh's.

Hope that clears things up for some ppl getting them from CC. I'd give more info on the description of the disc's, but it's really hard to see this with the spindle sealed.

Good Luck!!

Unfortunately I don't think there's an easy way to tell. I purchased a pack from CC and BB. Opened the ones from CC and they're Ricoh's but I had the foam washer on top. Haven't opened the ones from BB yet.

PMed to Staples, got a Black bottum, the disks were smooth/clear on top, also with a foam washer on top of the spindle, they were CMC mags, took them back. I bought the same dvd+r 25pak from staples 2 months ago, except the disks had Frosted tops, they were Ricoh's.

How bad are CMCs compared to Ricohs? I bought them at CC, but have yet to open them. Felt washer, black base...

What program do I use to identify them?

I went to the Best Buy at 635/Midway in Dallas just now and picked up 2 spindles of what I thought were thin-line TDKs. I did find two spindles out of about 12 that had a thicker line around the center of the disc, so I used those to compare and sure enough, the thin-lines are Ricoh 8X discs.

They have about 40 spindles in total at that store, but none of the 100pk's that are going to be on sale tomorrow are thin-line. They all come out to the same price anyhow.

I picked some up, but both nero and ez cd and dvd creator only allows me to burn at 4x (I have an 8x drive). Any way to force them, or any programs out there that will try and burn it at 8x (I know dvd decrypter will, but that only burns ISOs).

I would rather burn at 8x since I bought an 8x drive....
