Be careful thinking you have 30 days to return the warranty without being prorated. On the BB website, I just read that it must be returned within the return period for the merchandise bought. In this case, our open box laptop has a 14 day return period. We didn't wait around, returned the 3 year plan the next day!

Just found out, we can sell the Vista premium upgrade discs that are being sent to us for free. Can get at least $100 for that, so this laptop is super cheap!!

Funny, my company is right off Blossom Hill! We bought her laptop at closing time last night, at the 237/880 Best Buy. She lives near the EL Camino store, so we are going to check there tonight and return the extended warranty at least, if we don't find an even better deal!

For $40 they offered to 'speed up' the computer by taking all the excess programs off of it for us. Said it would boot up a lot faster that way and showed us 2 computers boot up as examples of before and after. You'd think they'd do this for you for FREE and want to win customers... No Worst Buy wants to take all the bucks from you! I don't feel bad at all returning their bogus '3-year' warranty.

"bogus"? Are they forcing you to buy it? They should do it for free to win customers? Tell me this, how long did the initial boot up take on your gf's new notebook? Add on top of that the time it takes to get all the windows updates you're missing. And then multiply that by every single pc/notebook purchased at BestBuy. How mch labor do you think would go into that? It'd be stupid on BestBuy's part to not charge for that kind of service.

FYI a pc optimization from BestBuy includes the removal of any/all trial software on pc, all windows updates/patches, registry tweaks, and removing unnecessary programs from startup.

Sounds like a big waste of money to pay for that service...

I never heard of this until yesterday when I was showing some guy laptop prices on the Dell website and found that they now charge $10.00 to not install the junk trial software. What a joke.

LOL, indeed. I spend about 2 hours getting rid of the garbage that ships with any commercial PC/laptop. Dell is about the worst one out there, they have more garbage loading at startup than any other.

Hate to continue this tangent off the OP's thread, but that "Value Added Software" you hate so damn much is what allows the PCs to be sold so cheaply - the software companies pay the OEMs to put the software on there. Just be glad Dell isn't trying to recoup the money they lost from the software companies by taking that stuff off for you.

Didn't see this thread earilier.

This Tuesday I picked up a Toshiba P105-9722 laptop from my local Best Buy for $1299. They also gave me a $200 gift card. This machine has a 17" (1440x900) display, 2gb ram, 200gb hdd, dual-layer dvd burner, and a 7900gs (256mb) video card. It comes with XP Pro/SP2. Normally $1999.

It was listed as open box item with a small note say many available in box. Basically I got a great deal on this laptop in a factory sealed box.

Already loaded WOW on it , got wireless going with a $49 Linksys router and the game is smooth with all features on at 1440x900. The HDD is a bit slow but that is only noticable on initial load, once it spins up its access speed is more than fine.

They had some Compaqs, a few VIAO, and such, down there also listed as open box specials. Check them out, see if they have one still in the factory box.

Oh, this laptop qualifies for an upgrade to Vista Business edition.

Shivetya - Where are you at? Best Buys around here seem to only have Gateways left. This is silicon valley and computers sell FAST...

Microsoft will actuallt send free Vista OS disks with purchase of a new laptop? That's good news I hate that OEM crap with no actual CD/DVD to re-install.

Yah to YOU. Keep in mind best buy doesnt cater to basically anyone in this forum. It caters to joe schmoe who doesn't know jack about computers and people who don't have the desire to browse tons of internet information to find out what is and isn't a "good" system process to have running. Of course a mechanic will think its bogus to pay for an oil change at a car shop when hes a MECHANIC just like you think its bogus to pay for removal of software you never wanted because youre pc literate. Same reason geek squad is such a success. And yes they are pulling in mad cash I wish I had invented geek squad every day I look at the numbers they pull in knowing its 80% profit :/

It's purely convenience. I thought it was bullshit until I took my pc in after I spent 2 hours turning ****** off in the registry, updating win xp, and removing the programs only to find that the best buy optomizer (pretty damn handy tool btw too bad it stops working after a couple months until you get the new version) still found 144 tweaks that helped improve the performance of my laptop.

PS I checked all around my district. If you're in the midwest most if not all well priced laptops are gone. I know one guy who came in and bought 5 of the 10" sony $2200 laptops from me for $1299. I almost cried. I know hes going to make a serious profit on ebay. wish I had that kind of cash flow!
