This news is the inevitable follow up from a thread made earlier this year FORBES: Why Best Buy Is Going Out Of Business...Gradually

A few Nastradumbasses in that thread.

However, most of us, seem to see this as overdue. They may survive as a niche player, with a very small physical footprint, but the present incarnation is doomed.

I was surprised this wasn't linked earlier in this thread. I assumed it was already done.

So I'm watching the local news last night and the entertainment reporter is explaining the Best Buy news release. He says that consumers will miss the knowledgeable employees who make sure that you are getting the right product for your needs.

I think he must have talked to an assistant manager who quoted from the company manual.

That sums it up pretty well. They're all about making a few extra bucks in the short term without considering the cost of damaging their reputation.

fry's is such a better store to dork out with. they're advertising arduino boards in today's paper. how neat is that?

i had some time to kill before a meeting in a center that also had a best buy. i stepped in and realized i hadn't been in a best buy in several years. that was kind of shocking to me considering how often i used to go 10 to 15 years ago.

Peter Drucker has a theory that for every management layer that information passes through, it looses 50% of its value...

When I saw Best Buy's CEO on TV recently, I thought that he was an excellent example of Drucker's theory.

My perception is that the economic dynamics are against the Big Box stores. But it can't be good when the CEO doesn't have a clue.

Since I can get to a Fry's in about 12 minutes, I'm not too concerned. But if we loose all of the big box stores, the world will be a smaller place.

Very interesting, thank you.

1. That consumerist pic of him = invisible dicks are everywhere! Pardon my vulgarity.

2. He seems pleased with their online presence. He should be, it will be just about all they have when the dust settles.

3. He sees BB as a showroom for the vendors, and, that is somehow an advantage? The guy is delusional. What good is that, if they kick the tires in your high overhead b&m, then buy it some place else?

4. He is basically conceding that the small, mobile, stores, are going to phase in as the existing big showrooms phase out. With just a few big stores left in areas where they perform well.

good call. it matches the microphone dick in the katie perry ad

the same online presence with jacked -up prices and in-store redirects to even higher prices?

most people are only now catching on. he has not caught on

That's pretty comical

Best buy is dead. Not this year or the next, but it will end up a pathetic shadow of its glory, similar to circuit city. It's probably not really the management's fault. It's just a dinosaur business model and the only way to fix the business is to totally reinvent it.

They have no chance, they cannot possibly keep these huge stores with the high cost of employees and floor space in pristine retail areas and compete with amazon et al. No hope for them.

I worked at circuit city for 4-5 months right up until they started liquidating. I swear they sent videos from the CEO/CFO etc. denying the fact that they were shutting down even 1-2 months before closing the doors.

I imagine the same amount of denial is going to hit Best Buy.

We all have our BestBuy horror stories. I'll spare you mine... But we all have one.
I can get stuff faster from Amazon Prime, cheaper, taxless, and did I say faster than waiting in a line at BB.

Amazon will be charging tax later this year. But yes best buy is still grossly overpriced.

I saw this coming. Well I'm sure a lot of you did as well. They started with reducing the perks employee's had. Accessories for example we used to get crazy discounts like $25 cable for $1. They then made it 50% as the maximum discount. Over the time I spent there the erosion of employee discounts gave me a heads up of what was going on. Pushing credit apps every day as if it was vital to Best buy's survival. Apparently not far from the truth. I liked my time there but I am thankful it is over.

Oh yeah and I want to echo what has already been said. They need to match online prices.

the most amazing thing i notice about the stores is they can't even sell tv's right, if you watch the custom video feed for all the wall display tv's its overcompressed garbage.

instead of just feeding a bluray quality feed they waste the potential to wow the customer by showing off poor quality video.
