5 Big Retail Chains That Will Be Gone in 5 Years

Good riddance, trying to Price match at their store is a nightmare/impossible. Not the same BB 15years ago. Can't wait for them to close shop completely. ^_^

I like Radio Shack.... It's nice when you need a basic component and don't want to wait for a few days to get it online...

The rest can DIAF for all I care. Though I do admit it would be sad to see Sears go, even though I haven't been in one for probably 3 years.

BB used to be a weekly stop for me. Then one time they treated me like garbage on a warranty issue, and I haven't stepped foot in there in about 6-7 years now.

Amazing how frail the vendor/customer relationship can be.

Amazon will be charging tax later this year. But yes best buy is still grossly overpriced.

Depends on the state. Indiana recently made a deal with them to start collecting taxes in 2014. In the meantime, Amazon and others are pushing for uniform online sales tax legislation in Congress.

It doesn't matter, however. Amazon could start charging sales tax tomorrow and in my experience, they're still cheaper than Best Buy on most things. However, as much as I like Amazon, I really do hope that a serious competitor sticks around to keep them honest. I'd like Best Buy to turn things around and be one of those competitors, but I don't think have a clue. As someone said in another BB thread (don't recall who, maybe PC Surgeon?), their slide really seemed to start a few years ago when their CEO bashed customers who would take advantage of mail-in rebates and said those would be eliminated. With those, they were often just slightly more expensive or the same price as online shops and it was worth it to get the product now.

I don't know how Radio Shack stays in business to be honest. They must do great business during the holidays that keeps them afloat because I rarely, if ever, see anyone in their stores.

there usually is a least one set with bluray, the model they are pushing that month.

This.

Don't believe that their TVs are set up by a bunch of clueless kids and that's the reason they look bad -- like alkemyst said above, they intentionally push certain models and those are the ones connected to bluray players while the rest get crappy feeds.

It's the way big boxes have sold TV's since the market gained competitive models.

They need to match online prices.
They CAN'T. I'm sure they want to but it's an impossible business proposition. The only way to do it would be to run an even more efficient business than Amazon so that this better margin can cover the cost of stores/employees. It's impossible, they can't match.

I've bought two TVs in the last year and both times when I went into BestBuy to buy it there were a few of us in the TV section and at most one person helping us. It's like they couldn't even be bothered to sell one of the most expensive items in the store. It's interminably frustrating as a customer ready to spend a good lot of money and nobody to help you. At least car dealerships know this. Imagine entering one and not being hounded immediately...just doesn't happen.

Radio Shack is a store that has survived longer than almost all of its competitors. When I got my Ham license in the mid '60s, it seemed that there were many stores like Radio Shack. Over time, that has changed.

Now, with things like the Arduino and Make Magazine, I'm hoping that things may change again ...

Of course, since I used to work for Heathkit, I may be a bit biased.

Yea i know, but the wall of tv's and most of the rest of the shelves are all playing back crap, thats what i expect maybe from target or whatever, but bb...they've had years to get their act together on that one, hdtv hasn't been new for a long time now.

yea i've wondered that for so many years now....

ive seen better prices on laptops at best buy lately than any of the online retailers. And Im starting to get tired of new egg, not as great as they used to be.

Whats wrong with the egg?
I think they are still the best for buying parts.

I wouldnt buy a toaster oven from them probably. But for PC parts nothing tops them.

The States can't tax imports/exports to prevent protected industries and economic sanctions against each other and the Feds don't have the power to collect a sales tax afaik. So I really doubt they will be able to tax Amazon anytime soon, it would break the Constitution.

If they could tax Amazon they'd be doing it already lol.

Besides shipping is pretty much a tax anyway. Shipping individually has to be more expensive than a B&M location with $4 gas. I've bought things on amazon only to find them cheaper at walmart, target, etc. Especially small items.

BBY doesn't have much room to complain since they are far away from the basics of running an efficient retail outlet. Management isn't focusing on inventory, loss prevention, competitive prices, etc. All management has been focusing on is how to best screw everyone over with warranty plans and credit cards.

Small/lightweight product (transportation, storage and floor space considerations) with decent margin that consumers rapidly replace. Seems like a good move if they can increase their sales.

I hope they stay around but it doesn't look like they have learned much over the last couple of years and from circuit city's demise

Why are they so rapidly replaced though? I used my last flip phone for a few years and this new one I've had for about 6 months now. I probably won't get rid of it until I see what WP8 offers and if that doesn't finally get me to jump ship to a smart phone I'll have another year of plain jane cell phone.

The Feds do have the power to regulate interstate commerce however, and I think at some point in the next few years, a deal will be made which will streamline the collection of sales taxes from online purchases. Last year, Amazon made a deal with the state of Indiana to avoid paying tax in Indiana until 2014 (IIRC) and said that in the interim, they (Amazon) would push for some federal legislation to facilitate and streamline sales tax collection.

Ah interesting I wonder if the states will see any of that money lol =]

It's simple...car salesmen make commission...BB employees don't. You think some 17 year old getting paid minimum wage cares about how much you're spending?

Well to be fair at a car dealership if you come there with a wad of cash you will be ignored since they are mostly interested in also selling you a loan. BBY is no different they don't care about the TV but if you say you are buying the warranty you will have to swat the employees away.

Store#1066 - Tinley Park, IL.

Not surprised at all, their sales are probably low and customer service sucks.
Tried to do a PM on a HDD deal a few years back despite me showing the sales manager my receipt from another Best Buy (Matteson, IL) having a lower price. IIRC, they wanted $79.50 when I got it for $39.50 a few miles away on a Seagate 320GB USB2.0 drive. Prior to PM, sale associate showed me they had items in stock. Too bad their employees will suffer because of this. :\
