That page seems to be down. I guess they don't care anymore.

So what was the lowdown supposed to be? Salespeople asking you to get an extended warranty but just pocketing the dough as tips or something?

Read my post above. I bet they ask for CC#, etc. Then it's shopping spree time!

You guys who think this is not informative are wrong. You are so damn dense in your own egotistic selfish thinking that all you care about is yourself. For once can't you think of anybody else but yourself? I think that the poster thought well enough of everybody else to post this up and let people know about it. Yeah, so what if you already know that it's a fraud email? There are people that are not uber geek or cyber smart as you are and are learning just like you are. Some people don't have the know-how or common sense to stay away from these kinds of things but the major part of these warnings is to let people be aware that there is something going on out there that could affect others. I for one appreciate the fact that people like Shockazooloo take the time to tell others. It isn't that I don't know how to conduct myself online and know better than to click on unknown links or solicited emails that you have no knowledge of. Even though I know well enough I still appreciate efforts by other users to let others know about the fraud that goes on out there. If you don't like someone post why don't you just skip it instead of waste space in putting your non-constructive comments to yourself. It doesn't help anybody and it doesn't make things better.

Indeed.

I would also like to point out that not once has a scam thread ever been locked. If the mods don't think this kind of topic is inappropriate then I fail to see what threadcrapping will accomplish.

I've bought online from BB several times, and have noticed the don't have the quickest shipping or the best procedures to update you on the status of your order. I could easily see falling for this scam.
Really. In that case, I think it's time to call tech support about the broken drink-holder in your computer.

So I have now received an e-mail about this directly from Best Buy regarding their actions to fully prosecute the perpetrators of this scheme, and also to inform customers about their shutting down on-line orders temporarily, etc, etc. Looks like they could have e-mailed their entire customer base as soon as they became aware of the problem.

I received this straight from Best Buy:

IMPORTANT: E-MAIL HOAX NOTIFICATION

Late Wednesday afternoon, June 18, 2003, Best Buy became aware of an unauthorized and deceptive e-mail to consumers titled "Fraud Alert." That e-mail message, which requested personal information (i.e., social security and credit card numbers), claimed to come from the BestBuy.com Fraud Department. That message was NOT from Best Buy or any of our affiliates.

Best Buy is working with the appropriate law enforcement authorities to quickly resolve the situation. We are working to shut down sites affiliated with that unauthorized e-mail and Best Buy will work with law enforcement authorities to prosecute any perpetrators involved in this illegal act to the fullest extent of the law. If you replied to the fraudulent
e-mail in any way, contact your bank and/or credit card companies immediately.

No Best Buy systems have been compromised, and our online business is secure. The privacy of your personal information is of the utmost importance to Best Buy and any information you provide to us is handled according to our Privacy Policy.

As part of the preparation for the relaunch of BestBuy.com, online purchasing will be temporarily unavailable beginning Friday, June 20; however, our product information and helpful resource articles will still be available. Rest assured, the fraudulent e-mail will not affect the launch of our redesigned Web site.

If you have any questions, call Customer Care at 1-888-BEST BUY (237-8289) or visit our Online Pressroom.

To find out more about protecting your information, visit the Federal Trade Commission's Identity Theft Web site at www.consumer.gov/idtheft.

Thank you for being a valued Best Buy customer.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you've opted out of Best Buy promotional e-mails, don't worry: you haven't been signed up again. We just wanted to make sure you knew about this situation, regardless of whether you receive Best Buy promotional e-mails. You will NOT continue to receive Best Buy promotional e-mails. Thank you

I got this too and I don't think I've ever bought anything at Best Buy Online and I haven' bought anything in a store in quite a while either so I don't think they are basing it off anything....

Mine came from:

From: "Rajinderpal Anne" <Saskia_Anda@yahoo.com>
To: <xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
Subject: BestBuy Order #1095619. Fraud Alert.
Date: Thu, 19 Jun 2003 06:07:15 -0400 (EST)
X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2720.3000

It had a link that went to somewhere at digitalgamma.com whatever that is...

Yeah, the email content is all the same, so it looks like it's just a spam mail only nastier.

Grrr.......I've never liked BestBuy.com. They did a terrible job creating it and linking it up with their stores. Poor job on their part!

What part of this thread have you *not* read?!?!? Best Buy had nothing to do with this! This is not a Best Buy issue. it is a *scam*. It just happens to be using Best Buy's name. It could have just as easily been Sear, Circuit City, Wells Fargo, or Sex World.

If you had taken the time to read the thread, you would have seen folks confirm that they received this email even though they never bought anything from BestBuy.com. That's because the jerk who created this thing poached an email list from somewhere else. Best Buy WAS NOT HACKED!

The idiot who created this scam has set up multiple mail accounts to send the spam from. They also created different web site links for people to click on. The idea is that they are making people think someone else has their credit card number and is trying to use it to buy something from BestBuy.com. Now what would you do if someone had your credit card number and you were informed they tried to use it? You would probably give them your home address, phone #, and maybe even enter your credit card #, "just o make sure". The different email addresses and websites are used to try to throw off anyone who is trying to trace the perp. None of this was Best Buy's fault, but at least they are trying to stop it!

THIS IS NOT A BEST BUY ISSUE! I don't understand why anyone would think Best Buy had anything to do with it. Yelling at them, calling them, or boycotting them will not do any good. They didn't have anything to do with this scam!

MrRichfield is right...I got the email and have never bought anything online from BB. Whoever took the site down, did it pretty quick...I tried to go there within a couple hours of getting the email so I could leave them a bunch of crap info and the web site was gone. Then I tried to reply to the email to tell them to expact a know on their door from the feds soon and the email bounced (I even tried all the addresses in the header)...kind of made me mad that I couldn't tell them to f*ck off with their stupid scams.
