As someone who as worked for franchises such as Apple and AT&T, I would tell you that you will find the same structure in 98% of companies out there. Don't get me wrong, BB might be taking it up a few stretched notches, but this is how business profits. 99% You are offered a sale at anything you buy from a rep, some more obvious, others unbeknownst. That being said, I think it should be as fitting to have a balance for providing the best deal for your buck. Now do any of these stores practice that? its debatable.

Maybe 98% of retailers, and even that seems a bit high. Retail is a decent way to get your feet wet, if that's what is available to you. But once you graduate to something else, you will find that companies who perform work for other companies don't (and won't) get away with that crap. In my opinion at least.

pfft.

he/she came in and was getting a light ATOT welcome. most of the shit was idiotic jokes.

Until he/she/it starts threats about "flagging profiles" (bwhahahahahahaha). then it got good. It decides to correct someone on grammar (and has very poor grammar doing it.

I for one found it funny.

You know you're doing something wrong when waggy "flags" you for bad grammar.

Don't get his ass banned wag, he is so much fun.

So you're agreeing with other posters that the "Geek Squad" is not a real tech job...its a fucking sales position.

Gotcha.

If you really think something like that is going to boost your resume and set you up to work in IT, good luck.

If you ask me, your best bet would be trying to get into a Tech support type gig with a Telecoms company like ATT or a company like Comcast.

If you're in college, go for an Internship. I am doing an IT Management/Infrastructure Internship with a Fortune 500 starting in the summer, its going to do wonders for my resume and also building my skills. I am not a genius or a Tech Geek (Right now, I am computer support at my Uni. I am good at that, but not what I want to do) like other posters on ATOT, I don't come from a programming or networking background or anything..but I want to reach the same level of success as other ATOT posters.

When I got that Internship, I was for sure that I wasnt going to get it because I didn't feel I was experienced or smart enough. Want to know why I got it? Because I unknowingly met the IT manager for this company and had a casual conversation with them about how bad I wanted to break into IT and how much I wanted to learn and what I wanted my career to be.

They set me up with a first interview that I got through and then a second....I found out later that the IT Manager had already told the person overseeing College Recruitment to give me a spot no matter what. I didn't need to do either interview, actually. I was a shoe-in because I proved myself to the person in charge and they gave me a chance. Now, Im working under them in the summer.

Go for something like that, don't waste your time. Get some experience at a company that needs IT people or utilizes another company's IT services...you will have a better experience than standing in some booth or sitting at home pretending you are actually fixing someone's problem by selling them something or installing something on their computer

judging from the awkward title, it is phone support. Do you have a list of job duties?

I am sure someone here has worked for GS in some way of form...but I highly doubt they would admit to it here....you just walked into the projects known as ATOT.

Lol its just phone support.

/r/talesfromtechsupport

This. Guys, its just a work from home call center type job. Nothing to get worked up over.

You don't start IT as a Senior Linux Engineer. You start at or near the bottom. BB is about as bottom as you can get without digging, but its still a paying job.

I worked as an in-store Geek Squad agent for a year.

you're interviewing for one of two positions:
1. phone support - customer service and ability to follow a script
2. Remote support. Basically, any computer with the ability to connect to the internet the in-store agents will hook it up and have you connect remotely to run diagnostic tools and anti-virus software. You need to be able to follow directions and have a bit of tech know how. I don't think this position requires direct customer contact.

During the interview just be friendly (non-psychotic) and try to convey that you're a team player who can follow directions.

Thanks, so I'm guessing not so much techy-related questions either. More or less a personality interview?

lol gotta love it, its one after the other. well first I thought it was a joke, but seems like some of you lames take opportune in boasting through your silly sarcastic comments you post on here, it's called an internet etiquette. Try and act the same as you would when you weren't hiding behind the computer screen. Srsly a comment like yours on such a thread, like am I suposed to congratulate you now?

wow you must be new here, for OT this is tame.

Yes, it's more about personality. They want you to be tech literate, but you don't have to know a whole lot; they have their own tools and their own procedures they'll teach you to use. They'll be more concerned about you being a team player and hard worker.

ok, any other details you specifically know about this "covert agent" position? I'm guessing this was the remote position you were talking about earlier

We'd hook up the infected computer to the internet and connect to a secure website where it starts up a remote connection software and an IM program so you can communicate with the in-store agents. then you run a series of hardware diagnostic, and antivirus software, rinse and repeat until the computer has a clean bill of health. If I remember correctly you can also reboot the computer into Geek Squad's Linux distro with a bunch of point and click interface tools (no need to know linux OS commands).

You'll probably be expected to complete x number of tickets per day or whatever.

Right, well thanks for your help, I appreciated that

I worked for geek squad as an in store tech lead for 4 years before I graduated. It's not that bad of a company to work for. They paid for most of my bachelors degree. The covert agent gig is not bad. 2 friends of mine do it now. The pay is great. One makes 22 an hour, the other 17 (he just started). It's not bad for someone in school still. You make your own hours. You just need to work 40 a week. You work any 40 hours you want. Also, not sure how it is now but there is always overtime to be had. Let me know if you have any questions.

Just curious, how many years ago was this for you? If it was before the economy went down the tank, I would be surprised if the flexibility you encountered is still there.

My last day was December 2011, not too long ago. Some parts of geek squad are managed separately from best buy. GS actually brings in quite a bit of revenue, but that doesn't make up for the terrible best buy product revenues. Most geek squad departments are fully staffed and their employees are getting plenty of hours, as their budget differs from the store budget (depending on the size of the store).

Thanks. Yeah, it sounds like a fair place to start w/ an IT resume, I mean all jobs have their ups and downs, so how are the benefits and time off, is it paid?

Tuition reimbursement, sick and vacation time, health insurance (forgot your cost on this), vision, and dental. (those are free). The BB discount is the best discount in retail too! Again, its a start-up company! And, the great part about covert is that you never use gas! You work from your own house! Watch Netflix on your downtime.

This amazes me. Str8Techie is a new member who asked a benign question and s/he gets this kind of ridicule? Are we all broke from Christmas? Didn't get what we wanted? For the love of God what reason is there?

......I'll just chalk it up to you fuckers being drunk

I'm sorry but if this guy couldn't tell by initials responses in this thread were (mostly) in jest, and then goes on to threaten to get me banned over it.........that is comedy gold.

Not as funny as BB using CIA labels for script-reading tech-support monkies who I had thought were all in India-now...but still pretty funny.
