I wasnt an employee of the service center. I worked as a tech in a retail store. But everyonce in a while the service center would get massively backlogged and the stores would send a tech to the service center to help out.

You might as well deliver pizzas...you'll make just as much and you won't have to deal with BB a$$hats!

What was your position? And if you dont mind me asking.. How much where you payed?

now that geek squad or whatever is around things might have changed...

when I worked for best buy a couple years ago, I worked at the tech bench. We supposedly were on the same payscale as people in the service center.

I got paid (iirc) $12 an hour or so.. maybe 11.75.. somewhere right around there.

I spent 6.5 years with bby and much of that time as a pc tech or Senior PC tech I would get as far away from that company as possible.

With the geek squad roll out the company still treats their techs like glorified salesmen, not really allowing them to work on machines and treating customers with problems as second rate. They want you selling psp's on the floor and not fixing computers.

I got screwed over my first couple years there, led the region in sales, was forced to work off the clock, but I was like 16 and 17 at the time and didn't really know what rights I had. They said I was too young to be promoted despite my superb selling ability, which is age discrimination. I transfered from sales to the tech booth after about 3.5 years. Spent my last three years in the booth where things began to go downhill pretty fast after I made the transfer up there. About 3 months into it, the managers began pulling techs to the floor ignoring customers who brought in machines, having them be our last priority. Having us pressure customers to the point that numerous times they'd drop their product and just leave, so the managers could hit numbers. I got promoted, figured maybe I could change some of the unethical business practices. I couldn't, they then wanted me to train employees and help open a new store, and wanted me to train these people to voilate common business ethics and company rules. At that point I began looking for employment elseware. For about the last 2 years there I was doing assistant store manager jobs for approximately 25hrs of my 40hrs every week. I was only making 13.50/hr when I left.

actually i havent read this whole thread but if you are a beginner in this market, best buy might not be such of a bad job.. i do want to be non-bias and open about everything so i did forget to add after you add best buy to your resume, people do start paying more attention when you decide to move on up... so this oculd be a starter towards your future/better job in this field

I know that times are tough now to get a job in tech, but I think in this case you can do much better.

Have you tried tech staffing services like Accenture? A lot of my friends went to Accenture after college and not only is it good experience, you get your foot in the doors of many good employers.

Are you going by what the want ad says as far as needing experience? Ignore that, that's only their absolutely IDEAL employee. Always apply for those jobs that say 1 or 2 years of experience is needed, I'd imagine you've got more than that from going to school and doing stuff yourself on the side for no money. When they interview you they'll decide if you're experienced enough.

Graduated from college with a BS degree and not sure if you want to work at Best Buy or not. It is a very tough decision. I hope you have the strength to choose wisely.

30-45 min is a small commute. The pay is enough to live on. The job, though, is probably dead end

If you got nothing else that looks promising right now, take it. Keep looking for something better after, of course, but take the money & experience now. Better some work experience on a resume than none.
