it never fails to amaze me how stupid store managers are. This is a common law that you cannot stop someone unless you SEE them steal. I was told this when i used to work at a record store.

Good stuff. If they had blocked my car I would have given them a nice fat lip.

he says something to that effect but cannot prove it-he holds it just as opinion on the "epilogue" page. Anyone have any definitive word on this subject?

I think the guy is just being a prick. The BestBuy employees are just doing their job and are trying to reduce shoplifting which I assume we all want. I mean it only takes 30 seconds of his time to have his receipts verified. I think they're doing in Walmart as well now. He's only pissed he had to wait earlier while he's signing up for his dish service.

Just my opinion, but this guy is probably one of the @@sholes that parks in the fire lane because he is in a hurry.

Man, I hate people that think they are more important than everybody else. It's just like the people who
fly up the turning lane just to cut back into traffic when they get to the light.

I'll have to thank this guy the next time I pay alot for an electronic component at BB.

All he's doing is giving shoplifters a little more ammunition.

I really, really hate thieves. Almost as much as liars.

this guy went through way too much trouble for something really stupid. Standing up for your civil rights to not have your receipt checked? What a god damn idiot.

This guy is just a jerk. He COULD have just showed his receipt--it takes all of 2 seconds. If I was the BB employee I would have "detained him" because I was suspicious of him shoplifting on the grounds that if he had nothing to hide, he wouldn't be so adamantly trying to do so. If he wants to sue for "false arrest" as he puts it, which I think is the wrong term, I'd like to see a judge uphold it....in fact, I would have flatout called him a thief and called the cops.
It's true that door guards are something of a paper tiger, but this guy is a paper punk. If he has such a problem with door guards, why doesn't he just shop elsewhere?

Pretty funny, as are the linked responses from best buy. Who hasen't just ignored a receipt checker every now and then? Now I don't feel the little twinge of guilt for ignoring the price checker at a ballsmart.

I ignore the receipt checker everytime. I either wave it in his general direction or just keep walking, but if he asks to see it, I'll just show them. This clown claims that once he pays for merchandise it's his property to do as he pleases, and he is quite correct, but the receipt checker is there to ensure that he doesn't do as he pleases with someone ELSE's property....

What cracks me up is the line from the best buy employee..

<< it illustrates the fact that "the customer" will put up with a lot to save 10% How else do you explain the continued existence of
Kmart?

actually.. that might have been true where you worked, but its not really true.

Its the 'law' that someone has not stolen anything until they LEAVE the store. While they are still IN the store, they have not removed anything from the store, therefor it cannot be considered stolen.

Once they leave your store, they can be stopped for search.

And the author of the 'story' is in effect correct when he says:

You must see the shoplifter approach the merchandise
You must see the shoplifter select the merchandise
You must see the shoplifter conceal or convert the merchandise
You must maintain continuous observation of the shoplifter
You must observe the shoplifter fail to pay for the merchandise
You must apprehend the shoplifter outside the store this is the main point
An employee failing to meet any one of these criteria is supposed to let the suspect go

The guy is an idot as well as a jerk. If he was in so much of a hurry, he would have showed his receipt and spent 10 seconds waiting on the guy to verify the purchase. But, since he's so damn cool he knows his rights, he wasted what was probably 10-50 times more time than he could have.

But, no, he wanted everyone to know he's cool and knows his rights. He can walk out being an ass and not having to bother with the receipt checker. Instead, he wanted to be rude and disrespectful to others and cause a scene. If I were one of the workers, I would have gotten the license tag number and then tipped the police off that it was stolen. That would have probably wasted some more of his time in the future.

This guy is just a trouble causing Pr!ck, nothing more to it. Some people have nothing better to do than act like a fool and cause other people problems. He has no right to do this to people who are just doing their job. What a worthless individual.

Also to the people who said "i'd given them a fat lip" or that you'd kick two of their asses.....Get a life. Your some little computer geek sitting behind a desk with nothing but a big mouth. LOL. Saying your gunna kick two guys asses...give me a break. You realize that makes you just as much an a$$hole as the guy who did this? You also realize you're still on private property and you'd be commiting agrivated assault and you'll get jail time? You also realize that even if you run they've got video tape of you and your CC slip with your name (and signature), which the police can use to find residence. You're a complete and utter moron. Does it actually make you feel like a man, or do you actually believe we'll think your "cool", by saying you would have kicked someones ass? What childish remarks. Grow up, you're nothing near cool. Treat people with respect. The reason he got no respect is cause he has shown none.

Oh yeah, everyone who posts at AT is a 12 year old pimple faced geek, right? <rolls eyes>

However, I wouldnt doubt that was the profile for an average best buy employee though.

Luckster - i'm not saying that is the case for everyone. But anyone who makes those comments is generally what you discribed. Maybe i didn't mean geek, cause any geek is intelligent enough to not treaten bodily harm against an employee who is simply doing his job. It's more of a childish comment, something you'd hear from a 12 year old stupid person (not a geek), but your description was fairly close

WAit...i know why, your from Alabama

Realize that i'm just playing with you...don't take it personally..hehe.

Of course they were childish, they were satirical remarks. I doubt I would ever be in a situation where two BB employees were forcibly blocking my car.

let it go!

edit: IM NOT FROM ALABAMA! Thats the default choice! I am from ohio, not like thats any better.

Come on - whats the alternative to reciept checking big items?

We either would have to go to Circuit City, or pay another 5%. Either way we all get screwed because some people "are in a big hurry".

Well I'm not paying another 5% OR having to go deal with another chain just becuase some people are "too important and busy" to show a reciept to a store employee for 30 seconds. :|

Yeah but the two of them would have still beat your ass...you'd better just backed over them. Atleast then they couldn't get the plate number!!

Don't worry, i'm from Tennesee, i really can't say much without getting ragged back. hehe.

As to whether or not this guy is a jerk:
We have no real way of knowing what he is really like most of the time. Who know if he is this confrontational all the time. If he is, then is probably a jerk. BUT he wasn't exactly rude or threatening in his letters or responses to the replies. I'll give him the benefit of hte doubt and say "He aint no jerk!"

Hes replies were pretty mature, but he did mention at one point "In the past few years I've been ignoring receipt checkers..."
For some reason he decided he needs to be the Rosa Parks of consumerism....and the fact that he was so adamant about something so silly......I gotta go with jerk. Even if he's only like that when he gets asked to see his receipt

This guy might be a jerk, but I think I'd just let him leave, based upon what his reading material is...
