Best Buy recycles old electronics

Got an email from Best Buy. Even if you hate them, this is still cool, especially since it costs me $10 to drop off a TV or monitor at my municipal disposal site. I'll probably drop off an old printer and monitor this weekend.

Not a bad deal if you're planning on buying a cable or something cheap and need to get rid of some old electronics at the same time. Fortunatley, there are free e-waste recycling days aroudn here on occasion so I just let it accumulate and wait until one of those events.

I also take the opportunity to hunt for Model M keyboards. Normally, you can grab them for free and then, if they're in good working order and clean, sell them on e-bay for $50 a pop. Gotta love those model Ms.

That's good to know. I wanted to recycle two old inket printers but Staples wanted $10 each to take them. I said f*ck it and just threw them out.

I noticed they also take old batteries - they're not legal to put into regular waste here (SC), but the regular recyclers only take automotive batteries.

Unfortunately, most charities have no use for dot-matrix printers and 14" monitors, working or not. Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc., need something with at least minimal resale value, not obsolete unsalable junk that will either end up killing space on their floor (or warehouse) or require them to pay to dispose.

Probably this. You have to be careful with electronics "recycling," a lot of companies just ship it off to the third world.

Not just China. Even more goes to India/Bangladesh.

What's even more insane is the ship recycling in India. Villagers migrate there and literally tear apart these behemoths with hand tools while often barefoot. :shocked:

Free to dump it on craigslist. There is no shortage of people wanting old stuff for parts, experimenting etc.

Since when is a good dot-matrix printer obsolete? Maybe you should tell the companies that still make and sell dot-matrix printers that they should drop their "obsolete" printer manufacturing, then.....like Panasonic, Epson and OKI. Strange that these companies still manage to make and sell dot-matrix printers for a profit...and even more surprising that the cheapest start at around $200 and go as high as $1800.......

Dot-matrix printers are still widely used, esp. in business settings that need to produce multiple copies of a form, like in a retail setting (invoice that's signed) or health care (sign and receive copy), etc. The two-piece and three-piece carbonless paper is faster to produce and easier to manage than sheet after sheet spit out by an inkjet or laser copier/printer, esp. with forms that have to be signed.

Inkjets and lasers are not the end-all and be-all of printing in all environments.

You're making me want to dig up an old paralell epson from my attic, get a USB to paralell adapter and use it to print out bad poetry I've written.

I recently read an article in the newspaper about one of the local charities begging people to stop dropping off old monitors. They can't use them, and it costs them $10 each to drop off at the local dump.
