Ah, but what would happen if they returned it to ATI, and ATI turned around and said "OMFG it haz b33n teh h4x0r3d!"* and sent it back. Then, BestBuy are down two cards. That's no way to run a business.

I have a question: Can ATI tell whether or not the card just fvcked up or if someone fvcked it up? I mean weird shizzle happens to electronics just because they were lemons. (ie my memory I bought from a certain company contained errors running memtest in three different computers and it was brand new. The company might say I was overclocking the memory and running it past it limits. But, they didnt. ALTHOUGH I did have a receipt)

Yeah, they can tell, but it's usually only signs of physical tampering. Things like screws being anything other than physically perfect, screwdriver marks near the HSF assembly, HSF clips being chipped or scraped, etc etc.

Also, burn marks on the GPU are usually indicative of heat damage. Stuff like that.

I've gone back to CC 5 weeks after making a purchase to get a copy of the reciept.

Circuit City is great with that. I used to work in a CC when I was in high school, and I remember looking through the computer and finding that it kept all old transactions (well, not the little ones like batteries, but anything significant). I found the reciept for when we had purchased a satellite TV there several years earlier.

Not sure if their system still works like that, but if it does, CC can retrieve any receipt (and since the stores are linked to a central network via satellite, you don't even have to be at the same store you purchased at).

Best Buy, however, is completely useless when it comes to customer service. I don't shop there anymore, since I've been ripped off countless times, as well.

OMG. I hate best buy with a passion that flows through my veins so deap i want to kill them all.(maybe not that bad)

but yea, i had a best buy problem. I went to the store to get a cooling fan with my friend. I had a gift card from a birthday a couple of months ago. I also had two coupons for 10$ off. I picked out the only fan they had cause they never bother to restock anything, and i went to purchase it. I gave the lady my card, and she scanned it, and turned to me and said "oh im sorry, you dont have enough money on this card, do you have 3.20?" (all because they never put price tags on anything, and if they do it was from a sale a week ago) So i gave her my coupons, and she tells me i need to spend 5 more dollars of junk to be able to use my coupon, since it is being used with a gift card. So I go get a cheap grounding wrist thing and come back and hand it to her. She says "oh, I figured out how to put the money on the card, you can put that away."

So I come back ready to just walk out the door with my fan, and she says i need to go get my item again because she messed up. I thought, "ok, this will just take a second". So i come back with it and she tells me again, I dont need it. So she puts the fan in the bag and scans my card, and low and behold she took all the money off the card. she told me and my friend that we needed to wait 5 minutes, cause it takes a while. she tells us to look around the store for 5 minutes. after about 5 minutes of looking around, we come back and she is talking to another employee about how she can scan her hand, and how he got the scanner to scan his eyebrow. She tells her friend: "oh yea, I haveto scan this kids card for his fan, Give me 5 more minutes, cause this takes a little while". AFter coming back 4 times to check on her to see if shes finished, she is never even trying to get it to work. (she did the same thing every time: scan my card, type 19.26$, which was how much was on my card, and hit enter, then hit backspace 8 times. She finally got it to work, and hands me my card. IN TWO PEICES!!1 she says "Oh, its ok, It is still scanable, and just walks off like nothing happened. I found her entire attitude really rude, and the fact that she wasnt even working half the time. I spent a good 45 minutes in the store just waiting for her to scan my card, WHICH she broke. I am definately keeping the receit, casue when i plug in my computer after it is finished, I want it to work, and if it doesnt there will be HELL to pay!!!11

How would the store know it was within the allowed return period?

They wouldn't. But, under the name of Customer Service and the device (looking unabused) and all original packaging, they'd take an exchange and give you a new one.

This is coming from a guy who hates Best Buy and would never shop there. That said, I figure most large chains wouldn't mind an exchange without a receipt. I hate Best Buy.

They have the ability to look up transactions perfectly fine...they just choose not to. They are a perfect example of poor customer service.

If he bought it with a CC. What if he bought it with cash? How do they know he bought it and all that? It proves nothing. Again, some stores will take an exchange because they want you to come back and spend more money.

EDIT:
Really I did not lose the receipt, my brother did. He is mentally retarded and I put the receipt in his dresser and sometimes he tears up his room and wrecks stuff

Then wtf are you so pissed at ATI for.

his brothers problems are acutally our fault

i think OP bought a bootleg 9200SE that had a huge heatsink on top of it along with a box of a 9800pro, and he's trying to sell it to besybuy for $265.

that explains that:
1) he doesn't want to RMA the card
2) he frequents anandtech and buy a 9800pro on regular price at a bestbuy? please...
3) he "lost" his receipt
4) he's been quiet for a while

anyway that is just my guess. i apologize if you did buy your 9800pro at $250 with tax, at a bestbuy at regular price (which has a sale on the 9800pro like every other week) and lost the receipt, and what a surprise you paid with cash!

tough luck to you then. this is like the time when the guy posted this thread that he'll write a letter to his gf's parents that he's going to india to bang their daughter. about 500 people offered him sound advice but he just won't listen.

I should have never bought him a ATI, I should have went with nvidia in the first place

there's nothing wrong with atis in general, it's just a bad apple, which nvidia has just as many of.

you should at least be able to get a return if you have the box with some kind of bb sticker or gave them your name for their big brother computer system, if not they are a-holes. i'd just buy online from now on.

BB should still have you in there system if it's under 30 days. Go back tell them to look up the transaction. If they don't make a scene there. Then if they reject you again call the headquaters telling about this and that what happened. Usually they help you out if you bitch at them alot.

[Edit] Of course, this is now a moot point as he found the receipt.

So I get the card home install it and it seems to work OK, no problems. After about 4 days, the card goes sour..will not power on. so I pulled card from his computer and try it in mine, same thing, screen will not come on. I put MY 6800 back in my and computer fired right up.

I then tried to take the card back to Best Buy to exchange it for another one...you have 30 from date of purchase. I could not find my receipt but I did not think it would be a big problem, I mean I just wanted to exchange it for the same thing. I take it to the service desk and the girl says can I see your receipt, I said I miss placed it. She then tells me that there is nothing that they can do and they can't help me!!!!!!!! I was like WTF !, let me see the manager. So I talk to him and he proceeds to tell me the same thing!!!

Why are they being like such ass about this ? I paid out $265.00 for a retail card so if something went wrong with the card, I could return it, no probem, but this is not right, I mean they are screwing me over just because of my damn receipt !!!

What should I do ?...Since I'm having problems with the ATI, I want to put more money to it and get him a 6800 GT like I have. But they won't honor anything, WTF??

I think buying a 9800Pro for $265 is stupidity, much less losing a receit to the purchase.

yeaaaaa always keep the recieit, ESPECIALLY if its bestbuy. I have found they are complete idiots who know nothing about computers.

I went into store to get a acrylic window for my computer. I come up to a bestbuy person and ask "hey will this fit on my atx midtower case" , and he says yes. I go home and its for an emachine SH!t computer. they have terrible customer support.

I have brought stuff back/exchanged/pricematched many many times at BB and as long as you have used a credit card to pay for the item they can and will look it up and print it out for you if neccesary. I find it hard to believe that there is something special about the BB in my area.

Of course, if you paid cash then you gotta be damn sure you don't lose the receipt, so always use a credit card.

You're a tard.

Buy the same card.
Hold onto the receipt.
Put the old card into the new box.
Return it to get your money back.
Best Buy will RMA it.
(this only works if they don't check serial #s.)
