Chad M,

Put yourself in Best Buy's position: Dude comes in with dead computer part and wants to return it. No receipt. What would you do?

I've a box of dead electronics myself, I should take it all to BB and see which ones I can return

If what you're saying is accurate, then try to RMA to ATi. The other possibilities are unethical at best, illegal at worst. And update us

Just my first impression.....

I think thats what everybodys thinking...I provided pictures and HEAT..not much more can I do ?

If I was trying to scam somebody, I would just try to RMA the card back to ATI..bingo: working card, no problem. But I don't want that, I paid for a brand new card and I really would like a new one in return or my money to purchase a the low end 6800.

Because the dead card you bought was pulled from a Dell. So it can't be RMAed to ATI. Now it's really coming together. That picture could have come from anywhere, you have to post a picture like that with a piece of paper that says "I am not a scammer" laying on top of the video card box.

The dead card DELL CARD was for my friend, as I've said before. For whats it worth ithe Dell kinda looks like the one NEW ONE I bought from Best Buy except for the fan. On the Dell on you could not see the heat sink fins, it had a plate over it.

You guys don't think there is any way for Best Buy to get my record of purchase ? I still remember what cashier I checked out through, the date time..ect... ??

They don't keep any records of cash purchases ?

They can't prove it was you that spent the cash. Could have been a friend of yours that bought one for himself, and you used the date/time stamp on his receipt as "proof" that you bought it then/there. Just one possible scenario. You definitely won't get your cash back, but I'm kinda surprised that you wouldn't be able to get a replacement card.

Just press them about what costs they would endure if they were to take your word in good faith that what you said is true, that you did indeed buy the card there, just a few days ago, and misplaced the receipt. And play the "customer service" card, that as their customer they should do what they can to help you out as long as it isn't going to cost them a significant loss, if any..... probably only thing it may cost them is shipping, and I think on DOA cards the manuf. will pay the shipping costs, so most likely won't cost them anything. Or you could do the buy a new one, test it out to make sure it's ok, put the bad one in the box and return it. I'll admit I've done that on a number of occasions and it's always worked for me. And to be honest, if I was in your proposed scenario that's probably just what I'd do.

That sounds like a plan..i'm gonna try to take it back again and talk to someone else, maybe they can help me out. I know I'm in the wrong for not keeping hold of the receipt, but you would think a store would exchange it even out. I mean the store is not taking a loss, they are getting credited for the returned card, right ?

It's not "a problem with ATI cards" it's just the nature of electronics. You've had experiences with a total of one brand new ATI card thus far correct? Since ATI produces thousands, if not millions of cards, it's not fair or accurate to generalize this as an ATI problem with just one lemon. Electronics are usually pretty finicky when it comes to their tolerance for damage/defects to when they totally stop working, so it doesn't take much for a device to stop working. So just chalk it up to you getting a bad roll of the dice, and picking the box on the left as opposed to the one on the right when you reached for the card on the shelf the night you bought it. I wouldn't give it much more weight than that until I heard lots of other folks complaigning about the same.

Circuit City is the best for returns, I make a point to by things there that I think I may have to return.

Honestly, what do they care? All they have to do is switch out the cards in the box and return the "defective" merchandise to whomever they bought it from. BestBuy (or any other store for that matter) isn't just gonna eat the costs of faulty merchandise....are they?

edit:
In any case, you lost the receipt and paid cash. If the manager's gonna stick it to you, then you might try somewhere else until you get a manager who'll cooperate.

Otherwise RMA it because paying $10 shipping is better than having a $260 paperweight.

And the other dude is right, you're a tool. But not only that, you're pretty damn stupid if you don't know how to work retail stores by now. Jeez

Well, as a current Best Buy supervisor I would most likely be willing to exchange it out for a new card. Video cards are DEVO products meaning that as long as everything is complete and it is defective, the store will get credit from ATI when they ship it back. Straight across exchange is a fair way to go about things IMO. Just drive to California and I'll take care of you.
