Best Buy Service Plans

i bought one of those GPS units (e-trex) and originally planned on keeping it for the duration of my three day road trip and returning it. However, i've found this to be useful and now plan on keeping it. I paid $139 for it (can anybody find it cheaper???) and the service plan is $18 for two years of coverage. I used to work at BB back in the day, but this thing is small....and i can forsee something bad happening to it. Do i get the service plan??

Being that this is something you'd carry around with you and it could get dropped, stepped-on, smashed, etc, I'd get it. *shrugs* for eighteen bucks, you can't go wrong.

Normally, I tell people that the service plans are a waste of money, but in this case, it's not a bad idea.

hah.. circuit city tried to sell me a 30 dollar service plan on a HD yesterday.. when it was right on the box "3 year warranty"

Would the service plan cover the things you see happening to the GPS? $18 really isn't that much money.

Find out just what it covers. If you slip and drop it down a mountain, then later recover the pieces, will bestbuy exchange the ziplock baggie containing your GPS for a new one? $18 is actually pretty reasonable for a 2 year plan, the ones they always tried to sell me were $45 and up

I don't know if best buy has the same thing, but Staples has a plan where you don't return a product....you just call up a number and get money (in the form of a cash card). This is the best plan ever, because you can basically get your money back for a product that wears out anyway. Most people forget they have one after 2 years, which is why Staples makes money on it. But if the AT folks started cashing in...i think the plan may stop being so generous.

ok...does anybody know how best buy's PSP/PRP works? This model (from what i can recall) has been around for at least a year, so if this model hypothetically was discontinued, would i get a refurbished unit if i had to cash in on the PRP or would i get credit towards a new unit OR get a comparable selling unit?

Best Buy's service plan will cover any defects in materials and workmanship (the only things not covered byt the PSP are physical abuse or liquid damage) and if the item is servicable they will try to repair it (if it is more cost effective to not repair it they will replace it). I do not believe GPS' are repairable items and therefore are replacements, which means you will get a new model of comparable technology.
