I was browsing slickdeals and happened upon a deal at best buy. If you buy a $100 set of car speakers you get a free radio and headphones. I recently bought the exact radio less than a month ago so I called in and asked a manager if they will allow me to return it and buy the set without bringing in the unit since it was installed already. The guy says yes.

I went in there expecting to do a quick return and buy... wrong. I found the products and went directly to customer service. The first person I spoke to asked me a string of questions and then informed me to go to customer service even though I was standing under the sign that said customer service... "I'm a PC guy"... okay not the worst thing in the world to wait in line again I guess.

The next person took probably 20 minutes to find my information... 20 minutes to debate with me about the deal... finally she calls someone from the mobile department to help.

This next guy comes up and all he is focused on is how butthurt he is that I installed the radio myself... Okay... He thought the deal was for two radios even though the BB site explicitly explained the deal... not to mention I had the speakers and headphones sitting on the counter. He also thought it was impossible to buy the radio from a store even though I picked it up from a different store some while ago.

Finally they call in a manager and she gives me a spiel about online deals and how I can't buy in the store even though I had the choice to pick up the items from the store. She wanted me to uninstall the radio, return it and then buy everything again online. Finally after a quick debate she tells the other two to do the transaction.

Jesus Christ... Probably an hour in the store just waiting and debating with min wage workers. If I had known I probably would have just said fuck it.... I already invested too much time though.

Honestly though... when I had a min wage job in HS, I never bothered trying to stop someone from getting a legitimate deal. These people seem bent on not giving me what I want based on small technicalities.

If it was less than a month ago, you should have bought the crap then returned it with the old receipt.

Their job is to harass you enough that you do not want to take from their profits.
They do not care about customer service because they already have a huge user base.

In the beginning I thought you were the idiot since it isn't really their fault you bought without waiting for a deal (I figured they would say no), but since they did it for you anyway, this becomes their stupidity.

You mean buy the radio and then return the new one with old receipt? They didn't have the radio in stock in that store.

If you still have the receipt from the original purchase, and you're within your 30 day return/exchange, then do the following....

1) Buy the deal now.
2) Return the radio from the just-purchased deal with the receipt from the first radio purchase. Doesn't have to be returned to the same store, if you're worried about more hassle.
3) Laugh at your triumph over the Best Buy!

Best Buy policies state they will give you the better deal if it is less than one month ago.

At any rate, I was already in that store too long to not walk out with my shit. This one they would not win.

Why do they care about profits? They see none of it.

wrong,
in no way the OP is an idiot

return- rebuy is a common practice and there's nothing wrong with it. i used to work at target when i was 16 and mgmt had no problem with it. I do it all the time as well.

Right, a month just seems long to me. If it was still sealed up and etc that makes sense, but this was already installed.

Not to mention no competition (at least here in KC, MO) from Circuit City or CompUSA anymore. Ever since Circuit City closed down, I haven't seen any real deals in their Sunday advertisements.

Best buy has an incentives program known as "Blue Crew Bucks" Basically, If the store hits their projected budget, all the employees get a cash bonus.

Also, the structure of best Buy isn't very customer friendly. You basically have a conglomeration of different entities: Corporate, website, repair centers, and retail stores; each with their own budget sheets. If a retail store doesn't hit budget, they get crap from corporate, but then corporate, or a repair center will pressure the store to eat the costs on uncovered returns/repairs/etc. So basically, when you're dealing with a retail Best buy store, you're talking to people who are constantly between a rock and a hard place. They really want to help you, but if ALL the paperwork isn't in order, they get screwed.

lol @ the OP.

I'm glad they gave you the business for an hour. It seems like there's always another slick trying to get something for nothing, then complaining about it when it doesn't exactly go their way. Self-entitled douchebaggery at its finest.

God Bless America.

Are you aware that the audio/mobile install department of BB has the largest markup? You just cut in their profit margin. Another reason that I rarely shop there. I can get similar items cheaper, free shipping, probably no tax.

ive got better things to do than haggle with BB over a 100 dollar buy/return transaction.

Was this an online only special? Do you have a link?

I went in there expecting to do a quick return and buy... wrong. I found the products and went directly to customer service. The first person I spoke to asked me a string of questions and then informed me to go to customer service even though I was standing under the sign that said customer service... "I'm a PC guy"... okay not the worst thing in the world to wait in line again I guess.

Under customer service there are two departments. For those that pay attention they can see a sign on one side clearly showing "Geek Squad" and the other "returns and exchanges".

This is why I'm thinking its an online only deal. The store now takes a hit for what the .com had already compensated for.

Finally they call in a manager and she gives me a spiel about online deals and how I can't buy in the store even though I had the choice to pick up the items from the store. She wanted me to uninstall the radio, return it and then buy everything again online. Finally after a quick debate she tells the other two to do the transaction.

If this was an online only deal you should be happy with this result as otherwise you would be riding silent while waiting for your shipment.

There are rules for everything and reasons behind them. You got what you wanted and more (didn't have to wait for shipment) and yet you still complain. Well to each their own.......

The only time I buy from best buy, is if its an emergency - like my video card went out and I need a quick replacement until I can get a better one.

About a month ago my wife and I had some time to burn, so we went to best buy to look around. I found a video card I had been looking at on amazon. The only difference was, the video card at best buy cost $100 more then the one at amazon.

I just laughed at the best buy price, and ordered the card from amazon the next week.

Like what you got 21,448 posts on ATF

I kid I kid. Best Buy's profit margins are shrinking; they got to make it up somewhere (although I don't know if this is the best place to do that).

Best Buy is probably on the way to bankruptcy, its just a matter of time.

More and more companies are focusing on selling stuff online - tigerdirect, newegg, amazon, frys,,, but where is the best buy online store? It seems to me that best buy is trying to hold on the same business model they have used since the 1990s.

They make it up in all the extra crap they try to tack onto your purchases (warranties, insurance coverage, cables, batteries...)
