Best C++ software

Hi Guys, I am in my second year of C++ at school and want to purchase some software so I can do stuff at home. Our school uses Borland C++ and at Comp USA they had a borland package of(Dephi, Java and C++) for $149.00. Is there anything better out there for a novice programmer who will probably major is CS. Or anything CHEAPER than that?

BTW, what is Dephi???

I highly recommend going to computer shows if you have them in your area. I bought Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 Professional for $60 bux in retail packaging. That's what i use for making programs. If you dont want to spend money at all, DJGPP is an awesome C++ developer tool (it was used to make Quake). It's DOS based but is great for learning or starting out in C++ since MSVC++ can be very complex. You can get DJGPP by going here and then clicking on Zip Picker. Hope that helps.

Use Visual C++ standard edition. It's cheap and very good.
Delphi is yet another OOP language. I think only Borland is supporting it now.

I have straigh A's in all of my CSCI courses, and I have only one semester (one CSCI course) left.

I learned in C using vi and gcc. Then I switched to JAVA and used JBuilder. You'll be able to complete school projects much quicker if you switch to JAVA.. JAVA has excellent documentation and the language is very clean..

If I was going to start using C++, I'd fight hard to stay away from Microsoft Visual C++.

gcc is no good. I write program in Visual C++ environment and then uploads the program in to UNIX system in my school (after that, just a little code tweak).

jjsimas: you'll have to fight pretty hard, since VC++ is industry's defacto IDE on windows platforms. VC++ is truly an exceptional development environment, which seems to condradict popular opinion, which usually bins all microsoft products into sh*t categories.

1) My point eludes you; MS Visual C++ is not the defacto standard ide for C++. I don't care what the standard is "on windows" but what the standard is across platforms.

2) Many developers work on a platform other than Windows. Look at applications written for devices other than the PC, such as servers, hand helds, embedded systems. MS Visual C++ is not the standard IDE for C++ but for Windows (even if that).
