I just got my copy of the Academic version of Visual Studio .NET from my AP Computer Science class, and I want to learn C#. What tutorials do you recommend that will teach you the basics, to the advanced? I have background in VB, VC++, C++, and very little java. Thanks for the help. Also, it would be prefferable if the tutorial was free, and online. I wouldn't mind getting a book, it is just that I want to learn the basics now, and then I'll get a book that explains it in further detail.

Here's a nice article laying down what C# offers
C# for C++ Developers

And here are a bunch of links to resources I've found useful so far
http://www.csharphelp.com/
http://www.cshrp.net

Also don't forget to check out the help files and the MSDN documentation online. If you already know C/C++/Java then just looking at the new specification is pretty much all you need. If you want to save yourself time later one make sure you understand how to use the debugger and exception handling.

hope that helps! I just learned C# a month ago and am starting to get into it now.

Well, it depends on what you want to learn about--if you just want to learn the barebones structure of the language, then I'm sure there are tutorials out on msdn.microsoft.com that will give you enough of a start, especially if you know Java--however, I would recommend the Richter book from MS Press...Applied Microsoft .Net Framework Programming...it will teach you all about the CLR and how C# uses it (which is different than the way things are in Java...)--it will give you a great head start on how to write .Net code...If you want to learn Window's forms, the Petzold book "Programming Windows with c#" is pretty good too...if you want to learn some of the other stuff, check out the Prosise book...if you were to get all three, you would have a very good span of knowledge on .Net and C#--if you must only get one, however, make it the Richter book...I would classify it as the best programming book I've ever bought.

Go to the library and check out "Programming C#" by O'Reilly

It is an awesome book. I have checked out like 5 different C# books and it is the best by far.

By all means check out the book written by the creator of C programming language - B. Straustrup.
It has a fundamental coverage of the language.

He's talking about C#/.Net not c++...Staustrup wouldn't apply (except that it doesn't hurt to know C++, either)

Bjarne Stroustrup created C++.. not C (nor C#) I wouldn't use that book to learn C++ anyways, it's more of a reference book.

by the way, here's a page I found with a lot of C# related links (FAQs, references, tutorials, etc..) neatly organized.

If you know Java, you know 95% of C#. Not counting the different APIs of course, although a cursory glance at C# has revealed many of the basic APIs to be rather reminiscent of Java.

At a high syntax level, your right..however, this is why I recommend the Richter book..it talks about the low level gotcha stuff while giving good general insight into how to program C#--and it's not even a C# book...
