Just got done watching Ronin on blu-ray, so I will nominate that first.
Other nominations are: Steve McQeen from Bullet, Burt Reynolds from Smokey and the Bandit, and OJ Simpson from Hollywood.

OK, we now have pole.

Ronin definitely.
Don't forget Blue Brothers. Not necessarily pulse pounding but ridiculous and in 1980 they did not have CG so they wrecked a lot of cars!

They're not going to catch us! We're on a mission from God!

In 1998 when they had tons of CG, Ronin wrecked 80 cars.

Re-read what I posted. Blues Brothers was 1980 (filmed in 1979). Probably before most on here were born hehe!

80 cars is nothing.

The original French Connection.
Car chase

The film is often cited as containing one of the greatest car chase sequences in movie history.[7

Ronin was the first one that came to mind for me.
Blues Brothers, both of them, had absolutely EPIC car chases. The second one (in 2000) also wrecked tons of cop cars too. It honestly looked like they literally had a catapult of some kind launching cop cars over the hill into a pile. It was hilarious.

The Eleanor chase scene from the new Gone in 60s was good right up till they actually USED cgi.

Ronin was filmed in 1998. When they had been using CG for a while.
AND YET, they still wrecked 80 cars, when they could have just as easily used a computer and only wrecked one for a model.
80 cars is something.
Its more than they wrecked in Blues Brothes.

I agree with the other posters:
Ronin
Blues Brothers

The French Connection (the original and not the re-make) was also pretty good with the three minis being chased by the cops after the heist.

I was trying to remember the other movie with a good car chase. Kadarin reminded me; it was The Bourne Identity and also The Bourne Supremacy.

if you create a poll, add: the transporter, the italian job, the french connection, the bourne identity/supremacy.

Any facts to back that up? Cars wrecked, totaled?
Oh and nothing beats having a car in a truck. RIP John Candy! Who wants an orange whip?
Ronin had mostly high speed chases through tunnels which is good but not so much metal twisting and destructive fun. BB2000 was even worse as previously mentioned.

Nothing beats wrecking an exotic though. It's funny to see the guys shed a tear over a freaking car like it was a person for crying out loud!

CG looks too fake. They do alright with pyro but physics and perception of how the camera and ultimately eyes see it just don't look right. Admittingly it is getting better. I thought the dinos in Jurassic Park looked hideous.

OK, its done.
Polls apparently are limited to 10 choices so many of you did not get your wish. I did have the good sense to drop OJ Simpson and will instead put him in a "Americas worst criminals" thread next week.

Steve McQueen > *

It will be very difficult to top Bullitt.

With that said, there's still lots of great car chases. Bad Boys with Martin Lawrence in the Porsche going after the bad guy in the Cobra. Bad Boys 2 with Will Smith in the Ferrari at the beginning and Martin Lawrence in the Hummer at the end. Jason Statham in Death Race was pretty entertaining.

Those along with the other ones mentioned here.

No T2 (first chase with Arnold on the bike) or T3? That scene in T3 with the crane was pretty awesome.

Ronin was good, but I like Matrix Reloaded. Except Ronin was all over the place, and Matrix was on the same stretch of highway with a sound barrier on both sides.

OK, I am watching the Ronin chase over again.
I had forgotten how baddass Jean Reno and Robert DeNero are.
