Hello everyone.

I'm looking to upgrade my graphics in my rig. I have a dell 3007 and am wanting to game at that high of resolution.

Right now i have a 8800GT, EVGA 780i mobo, Q6600. and 4gigs OCZ Sli ram.

I've been hearing great things about the 4870. Would that provide somewhat good performance at this resolution?

What of the gtx280?

Thanks,

my opinion, 4870. def worth it. thats a 25x16 monitor so ur gonna be GPU bound in most 3D apps. go for the card with higher memory bandwidth and bask in your new textury goodness! the 280 is def faster but the price!! omg!! too much! the 260 is ok but then jus get a 4870 with GDDR5 which will do better at those rez. if ur into OCing, the 4870 lets u go way more than 280 from what i read from xtremesystems.

Thanks for the reply vgkarthik88

I do agree with you, the 280 is so damn expensive. I think i will go with the 4870.
Thank you so much for your opinion.

I dunno. From looking at AT's benchmarks for the 4870 the GTX 280 seems to pull away from the 4870 quite a bit at 25x16 compared to 19x12. This is especially true for benchmarks with AA. In the tests where AA wasn't used, the 4870 fairs much better by comparison. I guess it really depends on if the ability to run with AA is worth it to you. I think 25x16 is where the difference in RAM size and bandwidth come into play between the 4870 and the GTX 280. Keep in mind that these benchmarks are done with standard AA as well, so this doesn't tell you anything about transparency AA which would probably lean even more in favor of the GTX.

780i really pisses me off. On X48 I could use either PEG for a single video card, and wouldn't have to worry about performance loss since both PEGs are rooted in NB. 780i won't let me use the middle or bottom PEG for a single video card - only the top one. And the wonderful 780i NB design has it such that a fan blowing a Saharan air to video card's backside. Oh and you CAN'T use a 3rd party heatsink on that stupid NB + PCIe 2.0 chip. That's one of the big deals that keeps me from getting a GTX 260/280.

512 MB ain't enough really at 2560x1600.

The 4870 is a very nice card, but it starts choking @ 2560x1600 when you try using AA or too much AA with certain newer games.

I'd look at the GTX 280, GTX 260, or wait for the 4870 1 GB, like i am.

I will be buying either the GTX 280 or 4870 1 GB, depending on pricing, timing (AMD manufacturers are going to lose me to nV if they don't get it out by end of July likely), selection, etc.

I can tell you that I ran into the 512MB of memory limitation at 25X16 with my 9800GX2(s) but not with my GTX280s.

As you have a 780i motherboard, I'd say GTX280 3 way>GTX260 3 way>GtX280 SLi> GTX260SLi>GTX280>GTX260>HD4870 are your choices in descending order of preference.

(with the GTX260 and HD4870 far below the GTX280 as single card options)

You spent over $1000 on your monitor, why starve it with a $300 video card? Seems mismatched to me, and are $460 video cards really "expensive" for people with $1000+ monitors?

When you opt in for 25X16, which is IMO the single most important upgrade you can make for your computer, you pretty much have decided from that point forward you're going to own the best single card currently available, or a powerful multi GPU solution.

"Bargain video card" + 25X16= big compromises

well remember if everyone is keen on the GTX 280, the 4870X2 is just around the corner with 2GB of GDDR5. plus it will be the same price as the GTX 280 or maybe slightly more expensive. it will also be a lot faster ( 30% faster i daresay? ). so, money no object, id recommend the 4870X2. but withnew cards coming out left an rite i feel unsure about suggesting a 500$ card that will be outsted from the throne soon. imafraid nRollo and i are at cross purposes! im an ATI fan!
