I have never felt that the 60's were lacking bass at all. It's a matter of personal taste. Also, some people say that the 80's need a headphone amp to really perform to its potential. I don't know - I didn't buy the 80's - but I can tell you I am even more impressed with the 60's after getting an inexpensive amp.

I don't want to have to use an external amp. How close do the 60's sound compared to the Bose they have on display at target, CC ect?

I haven't listened to any Bose. But I would be very surprised if they measured up to the Grados. In loudspeakers, Bose has big gaps in the audio spectrum that they reproduce, and emphasizing upper bass and treble to that they sound impressive to someone who doesn't know what they are listening for. I don't know that the same holds true for headphones, but I would suspect that their "90% marketing, 10% research" approach would hold true here as well.

I have seen some people say that the Grado SR80's don't need an amp, and some people say they do. I can't speak on that. I can tell you that the 60's don't need one to sound fantastic, but to me, the amp makes it even better.

Grados and other hard to find headphones will make you smile when you first hear them.

The entire Grado headphone line are 16 ohm impedance (electrical engineer talk for not needing lots of power). The low impedance means that nearly any computer sound card, audio receiver, and some portable media should be able to drive them no sweat.

Also, the entire Grado line are geared to music like The Who, Van Halen, AC/DC, etc. When you start listening to classical you might see, erm hear rather, some of the limitations of the Grados at the very very low bass and the very very high treble. But to do that you have to have some really picky ears and an excellent source (Super Audio CD comes to mind).

And lastly, all Grados are "open cans" meaning the Bose you heard were probably giving you some isolation with a "closed can." Easiest way to tell open versus closed, if you hear things muffled when wearing the headphones (with no sound being driven through them) they are closed cans.

I prefer the open cans so I am not completely incapable of hearing when people sneak up. Pranksters at my office...

Well I just bought some SR 80's off ebay for 82 bucks. I was going to get the 60's but these where only 13 more so why not.

sr80's have bowl pads instead of the comfies and a better cable. i believe the drivers are the same.

I own them for work and have a more expensive pair from Grado for home listening. Both are quality for music with guitars.

P.S. - They are very retro styled.

yea, i have the MS1 and they are great, very unique look.
