if you want dirt cheap, buy an used tablet from Google/Barnes and Nobles/Amazon.

i bought a tablet designed and manufactured in China once and sold it off immediately. while the chinese tablet Novo Ainol had all the bells and whistles of microSD/HDMI/usb/stereo speakers, the quality was poor. poor battery life, terrible screen, and not reliable.

I would advise either not getting a tablet at all or getting the nexus 7. Trying to cheap out on a tablet is a big mistake from my personal experience.

I got an Acer A100, and am very frustrated with it. It has decent specs, but it is slow, slow, slow. The wi-fi sucks and it has no 3G,4G connectivity. It has one software bug after another. Now the clock on the main screen has disappeared, it says the disk is full but only half the disk is really used, so it is continually trying to download updates but gives error after error that disk space if full when it is not. It also hangs up loading internet pages unless the wi-fi signal is extremely strong. Plus the 7" screen is so small that the virtual keyboard fills up almost the entire screen, making it very difficult to even reply to e-mail. It is nice though for simple web browsing and watching Netflix if you have a good wi-fi signal.

Oh, yea, like the poster above, I forgot to mention lousy battery life as well.

End of rant.

The Galaxy Tab 2 seems to get decent reviews.

Does anyone know if they swap batteries out on tablets when the refurb them?

Nabi 2 deal on Black Friday for $129

I think s44 said it in jest, but I'm saying it for real. It has a 'normal' Android mode, it's running ICS, quad core processor- it's a solid device. You have to do some minor hacking to get the Google Play store on, but if you are posting on this forum I'm sure you can handle it. It is a very well built little device.

I am looking for Christmas gifts for my youngest college-age brother and was hoping someone could recommend a decent "cheap" Android tablet. Some background: He tends not to take care of things very well. Therefore, I don't want to spend a ton of money of a "nicer" tablet just to possibly see it get torn up. This is his chance to prove to me that he can take care of it and maybe I'll get him a nicer one down the road if he uses it enough.

I don't expect 10+ hours of battery life or anything like that, but I want it to be usable and have decent performance. I know asking for durability in a cheaper product is probably asking too much, but I can at least ask your opinions on that. Finally, I'm hoping it runs a recent version of Android and ideally will have an upgrade path to 4.2. Here is the kicker -- I'd like it to be under $150. I might be willing to stretch to $159 for the original Fire, but I don't want to hit $200 on this purchase.
