Tigerdirect pulled a fast one on me. They shipped me the wrong monitor just before notifying me they were out of stock on the SA2311W. They notified me of a final incoming shipment on the 11th. If you guys still want this monitor it will be your last chance. Keep a close eye on the TD website.

I cancelled my order despite having one set aside waiting for expedited shipping on the 11th. TD isn't as trustworthy as I'd like, I'd really rather they not have my money.

Yeah that sucks. Wtf? Why would they ship out a different monitor than the one you ordered. Why would they think someone would accept a different monitor? Why not just cancel the order? No doubt it wasnt 120hz.

It threw me off cause it says 7 - 21 days to ship. They make it look like its in stock on their website but it isnt. I contacted Tigerdirect to see when they might be getting some and they basically said, "We have no idea". They told me the week of the 11th to check back as well but they also said nothing is for certain. To me it sounds like they have no idea.

I contacted Planar because I wanted to purchase one off Newegg and Planar told me they are discontinued and no longer in production. They are not shipping out anymore to anyone so....Id love to know how Tigerdirect is getting more when they arnt coming from Planar.

Anyways, I hope the Viewsonic I got is good. Planar was my first choice, but I am not paying over $300 for one nor did I want to wait a month for a "possible" shipment. Ill be a little annoyed if Tigerdirect magically has more in-stock next week though.

I just got the 23in. version of the new samsung monitors. Glossy screen is kinda meh. Colors seem really good out of the box. Backlight bleed isn't as bad as reported on the larger screens.

It bleeds maybe about a centimeter on the bottom left and right corners, and that is alleviated extremely when you turn the backlight down from the default 100% to around 38% where it's still bright.

Haven't gotten to try out 120hz yet because this $450 monitor didn't ship with a miniDP to DP cable... That seriously pissed me off. It has a DP to DP cable only, and doesn't even come with an HDMI cable. This is bar none the worst accesory bundle I have ever received with any product.

I haven't seen a single product that uses regular sized DP connectors. Usually everything is MiniDP and they didn't include the cable... Come on Samsung I just spent $450 and you coudln't include a $7 cable.

When monoprice delivers tomorrow I'll be able to give some feedback on 120hz performance.

Benq has been selling refurbs of their 23.6" 120hz XL2410T monitor for $200 shipped. They come in and out of stock. Just check the website often. Most fps gamers consider it one of the best monitors.

Yeah I think I remember seeing that, but Benq has never been a brand name id want to put my confidence in. Also, a monitor with only a 90 day warranty? No thanks.

I'll raise my hand and say that I never gamed above 60Hz. Honestly what does it do, frank question. I bought one of the Catleaps mentioned earlier in this thread and it gets up to 100Hz with the right cards and I just would like to be informed as to what that will get me. Also I'm going to have that aside a pair of 1080p monitors that won't go higher than 60Hz, would having one at ~100 and the surrounding 2 at 60Hz bug me at all. I'm not doing any of those crazy eyefinity displays, I'm just gaming on the big monitor and playing a movie on the other while chatting/web browsing on the third. I'm really interested because thus far I only considered 120Hz for 3D before I started reading all these threads.

Refresh rate and pixel response time on the 120hz displays are supposed to make them similar to a CRT for gaming. CRT's were better for gaming because they had almost zero input lag, and updated far faster than an LCD can. I know many pro gamers that still use CRT monitors because they believe the input lag on LCD's puts them at a disadvantage.

120hz monitors are supposed to make an LCD more like a CRT in it's response time and input lag. I haven't gotten to use my new monitor in 120hz yet because samsung is cheap and couldn't include a $7 MiniDP to DP cable with this $450 monitor. What a rip off.

Smoother movement. A picture's worth a thousand words:

60Hz:

85Hz:

Both from the korean monitor thread on Overclock.net. It's a bigger deal than people are willing to admit. And it is always noticeable.

Yeah those screenshots above are good examples, and that is only comparing 60hz to 85hz, thats not even 120hz.

If you game, you want 120hz, period. It makes a big difference even if you have below 120 fps. You can notice it even with typical desktop usage.

You wont find too many serious gamers who play on 60hz setups.

I did it for a while years ago for testing purposes and my god, I couldnt stand it and returned the monitor, went back to my CRT. It really doesnt make sense to me when people spend $300-$600 on video cards then run a 60hz monitor.

I just bought the Viewsonic model, hopefully it ends up being a good 120hz monitor. Its only $210. Should be here on Tuesday.

Finally got my Mini DP cable so I can see 120hz on my new monitor. Huge difference.

Almost feel like I'm cheating in BF3 now. Everything just feels more smooth, and it's far easier to pick out targets.

I used to have a different samsung 23 inch and it was supposed to have very little input lag and a fast 2ms panel. That monitor feels slow in comparison to the samsung s23a750 I have now.

It feels like everything is going at 2x speed but somehow the sound is still going slow. Also, how about that amazing moment when you pan around and notice every single detail in a scene? Feels so good. Going back to 60Hz is going to make you nauseous, literally sick to your stomach, mark my words. You better hope that monitor doesn't crap out!

As I posted in the a thread the other day, I am in the market for a good solid monitor. My thoughts to this point have been to get a nice Dell IPS monitor. My reasoning for this is I'm certainly not a "professional" gamer and IQ is very important to me. That said, I am actually satisfied with the Asus 60 hz monitor with LED backlighting. Bottom line, is there any loss in IQ going to a 120hz refresh rate? I've read in some discussion that there is and was wondering if I was possibly being fed misinformation? Thanks for your help. Edit: I almost forgot to say that MMORPG is my genre of choice for gaming. Anything else will be played strictly on a single player basis.

There shouldnt be much loss in IQ going to 120hz per say. I dont have that much experience since I just purchased my first 120hz Viewsonic a few days ago(but have used them often in other places). My previous monitor is a CRT so, having gamed many times on a 60hz monitor, its almost torture and hurts my eyes.

Like, typically some complaints on them is bad black contrast levels and such, so it is possible you might sacrifice some of that. It is true IPS have better colors, contrast, more details etc. I hear the whole bad viewing angle argument often, but I dont know, I tend to be sitting down at my desk looking straight forward when I use a monitor, call me crazy. I dont obsess about image quality to much, id rather have a smoother picture.

It comes down to what you do on your monitor and what is important to you. In fact, because 120hz will produce a smoother crisp image during motion, you could argue that image quality in that regard is easily better on 120hz monitors.

There is a misconception that 120hz is strictly for gaming. 120hz makes everything smoother so....its helpful even on deskstop use, although maybe not quite as noticeable. I would say if you dont game, you might be happy with an IPS instead if you really value quality over anything else(odd logic if you ask me).

And yes, an MMORPG has motion thus 120hz would be noticeable.

I'm thread digging here lol

What is a Mini DP cable?

I also in dire need of a monitor capable of doing 120Hz 3D or None 3D capable. My Asus VE248 Looks very nice, but sadly with 60Hz for gaming is really not that good. I have to play every game with Vsync on.

So would a Mini DP cable help me with this monitor or just buy a new one?

i'm curious why you'd be hesitant to put your confidence in Benq brand name - have you had bad experience with them? read bad reviews?

Welcome to the AnandTech forums.

This thread is almost a year old (what we typically call a "necro"), so I am concerned that the original participants are not going to be around to answer the questions you've asked. I would recommend and encourage you to start a new thread to discuss this subject, and to have any questions you may have addressed that way.
