The title says it all except I do not want to use Windex or something else on this new 21" Sony G520 since it will destroy the anti glare layer of chemicals they put on it... what do I use? a lintless towel and some water? a damp towel?

20 grit sandpaper.

Try a 100% cotton cloth dampened w/ a hint of water.

I've had a Trinitron 21" monitor for four years. I clean it with paper towels and windex. It looks like new.

I do the same with my Sony 24". It looks like new too.

Mild soap and water should do. Remember to dust off your monitor before cleaning, I like to use one of those air duster cans. If there is any sort of grit on your monitor and you just wipe it with some solution, you'll be grinding it into the screen.

Someone asked this a week ago. An engineer(?) from Cornerstone recommended a lambskin chamois.

But I just use non-ammonia based Windex and it works great with no streaks.

I have a Mitsubishi Diamondplus and it says right in the manual the window cleaner is fine.

If the cleaner contains either ammonia or alcohol, don't use it.

There's this guy on the forums who uses vinegar (straight or diluted, don't remember) with great success. Seriously.

EDIT: If you want the very best hygiene for your monitor, use this to wash.

I beilieve he's referring to something I thought I read somewhere that the ammonia or alcohol based cleaners would remove the small layer of anti-glare chemicals that the factory puts on the new monitor... although it seems most people here are not so concerned or are certain that this is not the case. I'm a bit confused but I guess a damp lint free cloth would be good if applied after dusting the surface. Sounds reasonable right? I feel windex sometimes left smaller streaks on my old monitor... and I believe it lost its anti-glare from doing so but i could be wrong.

Being the fool that I was, I used Windex (with ammonia, I don't think it had alcohol in it, it could have) on my old monitor (a garbage 15") and then it got a 'patchy' effect on the screen, especially when there was glare on the screen. I then used Tilex (ammonia free with alcohol), and then it further enhanced the pretty visuals.

Moral of the story: cotton T-shirts with Breath Fogger^tm works just fine.

I use a stlight mist of some regular cleaner, maybee windex or something. It cleanes of the oil from fingerprints and other dirt, but on my Sony and other monitors it leaves a small color streak so afterward I clean it with a water damped paper towel and then a dry one and then my monitor looks pirfect. After 3 years with my Sony the Anti-glare coating is fine and the screen looks good as new, at least after I clean it. I tried water and cloth and paper towels, but I could never get rid of all the oil and stuff off without a little cleaner first. But for those expensive monitors, I am sure there are monitor spesific spray cleaners and some whipes, one whipe that I tried worked amazingly well.

Today a Nintendo REP left a small bottle of cleaner that's anti-static, anti-smudge, anti-fog, and anti-reflective.

The rep said not to spray it directly on the monitors but to spray it on the towel. I used it to clean the console monitors and suprisingly my greasy fingers did not put smudges on it so the anti-smudge actually worked. Did you know Nintendo also has a brand of curiously strong peppermints?

I don't recall the brand of cleaner it was but I'll find out tomorrow when I work on superbowl sunday

I have a Sony GDM-500PS 21" Trinitron.
I use the the purple formula 409, multi surface cleaner. Hasn't hurt the coating at all.
If really concerned about the coating though, try water.

Most automotive stores sell a cleaner for car windows that have been tinted using a plastic window film, and most of the ones I have seen also say that they are safe for CRT and TV screens. I have used them for several years and am quite satisfied.
