I can't really suggest anything for you but some things to take into consideration are the amount of time you will spend in it, whether you need it to be fully adjustable, etc. Since you mentioned a price in pounds, I take it you're across the pond from me? If you have an office supply shop (here in the states it's OfficeMax, OfficeDepot) you could go there and sit in some to get an idea of the size and features that meets your needs. I was looking for one last year and the OfficeMax website gives a rating on their chairs as to the amount of hours a person would spend in it. I'm sure you could find one that's just as comfortable as the HM without the $1700 price tag.

Good Luck

Well on this side of the pond where the Herman Miller chairs are made they are not quite so expensive. I think the basic Aeron starts around $700, pricing seems fixed across retailers. One benefit of the HM's though is that they come with a 12 year warranty. Personally, I'd rather pay more for an extremely comfortable chair now than buy a cheap office chair every 2 years and wear it out.

Personally I spend a lot of time in my computer chair either working at home or playing games, so I forked over the dough for a couple Mirra chairs. I am very happy with them.

Buying a good computer chair is a very personal thing. It is not something I would recommend via Internet.

As was stated above, you reall should try them all. Many are displayed in Staple, Office Depot, Office Max, etc., and don't forget good furniture stores.

I got mine about 10 years ago from a local store called "Copenhagen." It is a Norwegian Ekornes Stressless chair on a wheeled base. It is marvellous. (I have been known to fall asleep in it.) As I recall, it was about $800 or so.

Each body is different, and the balance between comfort and function needs to be felt personally. Almost like buying a pair of shoes. Try before buy!

When I read that the first time, I thought "Holy crap! That's one heavy chair. I guess it would be $1700 for an 870lb. chair!" Then I realized... lol

You're definately gonna have to go try some out for yourslef. I read an extensive thread on another message board of people praising the Ergohuman ME7ERG High Back Mesh Chair so I finally just ordered one.

MIght as well have thrown the $500+ down the drain. Well, it's not that horrible. I mean the build qulaity is very good. It just isn't very comfortable at all to me.

It would have been a huge hassle to try and return so i still use it. If it could be easily packaged up I would throw it on the For Sale section here or ebay.

I myself, got a nice one about 1 year ago at Staples.
Not sure what brand, but it is a well recognized name.
And I agree, that you must go to the stores & see how
they feel & fit. Are they wide enough ? Are you comfy ?
How well the recline / tilt works ?

You could also consider a Recarro Chair but they are
somewhat expensive (about $1000 + / 200 or so)

My chair was about $200 (I think) and I am satisfied with it.

Things are all relative, really. If you have the money and spending it isn't going to be a hardship for you, or prevent any charitable giving you'd do - then yes buy the chair.

I've sat in a LOT of different office chairs. People here who would recommend you an office depot, or staples special over the Aeron are not good people to gather advice from. I have sat in and used those other chairs and I currently have an Aeron which I will replace with another if ever it fails me. I like it more than any other office chair I have ever owned.

If you haven't sat in one - you should try one out before you pass. The value of such an investment (in your comfort) is also relative to the amount of seat time you will be putting in. Consider that too.

Good luck.

Do you still hate the chair? I was about to buy one because the Ergohuman is only $479.00 right now, until I read your post. Is it really that bad?

i use a prosturefit aeron, it's the best i've tried. with i was picking it out I tried a human scale (donno model), steelcase think and leap, but they all feel very mechanic, while the aeron feels very smooth and hugs your body.

Where do you live? If you're near me, go to walmart and buy me a ~$100 chair and come get it. If it wasn't so awkward to ship back I would have returned it immediately after assembling it.

Honestly, it's not horrible but it's no where near a $500 chair. Maybe $150.

Wow, sounds like I wouldn't want it at all, even for $150.00, haha. I think I'm just going to have to pony up the bucks to get a Herman Miller or Steelcase if I'm going to be completely satisfied. Thanks for saving me some money and headaches with your post.

I'll toss another chair into the ring for you - humanscale freedom (http://www.humanscale.com/products/freedom_index.cfm).

I was in the same situation a while back and this ended up being the forerunner before I decided against forking over so much cash for a chair...at least for now. This was based on web feedback, how adjustable it is, and that it has an auto tilting headrest.

Well, don't just solely base your decision on my advice. I think Office Depot sells them (or they use to). Go try them out.

I just bought into the hype and ordered thinking it would be ultra comfortable. To be honest I spend alot of time with my feet propped up, kicking back in a chair. It probably is just more suited for an office type environment.

i keep wanting to put it on craigslist but I don't need a bunch or weirdos coming by to sit in it.
