I could update it, but just don't want to because of the risk of something going wrong and because FuseTalk won't sort them alphabetically, so there will be a lot of new games all piled up at the bottom.

It's not really the results of this poll being lost that scare me, but spending an hour copying and pasting stuff just to have the poll not show. AFAIK no one knows what causes disappearing polls and if it's just a random bug I don't take the risk. If there was an easier method to making polls with this forum software I wouldn't mind (a lot of them you can simply copy and paste seven hundred lines and have each one come up as it's own option) but inserting them one at a time takes forever.

Some people have no appreciation for "older" games. I see plenty of newer games getting lots of votes because the user plays it a lot, but with games like Counterstrike Source and Battlefield 2 in there it's just sad.

My vote?
Freespace 2. Best. Combat. Space Sim. Ever. That game had the best implementation of capital ships and large-scale combat I have ever seen.

I haven't bought a game in probably 4-5 years or so, so there may be some I haven't experienced that may supercede my list (from my POV, not yours):

RPG: Shadows of Amn: Baldur's Gate II, with Planescape: Torment in close second. The storys were very good in and of themselves and they did a very good job adhering to 2nd Ed rules.

Shooter: DOOM the original. It really opened up the concept of creating an atmosphere that inspired fear. Sounds from around the corner, flashing lights, dark rooms, etc.

Simulation: Aces High. It's an online combat flight sim using WWII aircraft. Very competitive.

Strategy: Fury in the Pacific. Great freaking WWII naval sim by now defunct SSI. Total Annhihilation or Emporer: the battle for Dune in second.

Sorry, but their were tons of games based on scripts and they came long before Half-Life and many are now classics like:

1. Phantasmagoria(edge of your seat)
2. Kings Quest
3. Police Quest
4. And many many more that predate Half-life by a decade or so.

the original, none of that mega or modded/custom BS
that game created players that KILLED you, no online CTF or DM game has come close to the skill of TFs finest
we shall see if the TF in the Orange Box will do the same
I think it has the potential to, it doesn't focus on all of the eye candy and realistic crap. instead, it focuses on objectives and teamwork, in fact, they intentionally dumbed down the graphics to weed out the people that game for that purpose

It's nice to see Supaplex in the poll. I'm surprised anyone here has heard of it. That game was awesome back in the day. I played a Mac port of it called Infotron, which was essentially the same game but had superior graphics and music that were top notch for their time.
