My recent 2.1 setup broke recently and I need a new one. I would like to spend less than 100$, preferably much less. Please tell me what the best bang for the buck is right now.

Creative makes some very good value for money speakers. I have used their Inspire 5.1 set for a few years then went for stereo set only once 5.1 setup became too problematic for space / family reasons. Sure there are better speakers that would cost you more, but there are plenty of much worse speakers that would also cost you more. So keep in mind price is not your best advisor. Best value is usually hidden out of sight

Some options for you:

2.1 set - $99 - I guess you pay exta 20 bucks for a slim woofer compared to the next set below I-Trigue 3000

2.1 set - $79 - I-Trigue 3330

2.1 set - $49 - two small speakers have both mid range driver and a twitter, something of a rarity in this price and it gives better accuracy in mid and upper frequencies - Inspire T3100 - This is my first recommendation for you, unless you want slim looks - then see two sets above.

2.1 set - $29 - no frills 2.1 set Creative A200

2.0 set - $49 T10

2.0 set - $99 Gigaworks T20 - if you want to get the best value out of 100 bucks this set it one to get, using it myself at the moment for skype and music from PC - this is my second recommendation for you - if you do not want the woofer. Believe me these small speakers deliver very nice bass given the dimensions.

Got a pair of Polk RTi4 bookshelf speakers for ~$135 including shipping. Hooked it up to a salvaged amp from an old 2.1 PC speaker set.

When I have time I'm going to upgrade the amp to a 41Hz AMP6-BASIC (running off my PC's PSU) with a separate plate amp on a sub (also to be built). I have a eD 12k.44 lying around.

If you're looking to spend less than $30 - these speakers are actually pretty good. My gf just got them to go with her new comp. and for $20 you can't beat em.

hey Howard, me again. do you think it will be better to have a multi 12v rail power supply for powering the amp6? at the moment i'm looking at some power supplies with single 12v rail and just started thinking whether this would matter in this case.

sorry if i'm hijacking

Hmm, as long as the rail has sufficient current for everything that it's powering, it should be fine. That depends on both the power supply and what your system is, of course.

yeah i gues as long as you get enough power it shouldn't be a problem. i was worried about noise but thinking about it, a modern psu should deliver a lot better power than your average wall wart.

If you're willing to buy used, you may be able to get some powered studio monitors for under $100. If you can, they're worth every penny.
