Best CPU upgrade for dual xeon 1366 mobo

Ok im looking to upgrade my dual xeon 5520 system and was wonder what 5600 series cpu would be the best bang for the buck. Anyone know what the current CPU prices are and whats available. Your input would be great.

I haven't seen much "bang for the buck" in LGA 1366. The hexcore versions perform decently, but are too expensive. My tendency is to use secondhand equipment, but after research, I'll be skipping over 1366 and going straight to 2011.

Well, in the absence of other comments I would recommend the L5640 if your board supports it. Six Westmere-EP cores @ 2.27GHz, it performs better than some of the faster ones and can be had for $250-300 used. Of course there are much faster ones, this is just my "bang for the buck" pick.

Any new CPU for this socket is just not worth it.

Hi, I'm new on this site so forgive me if your machine specs are listed somewhere but, if you tell me which 1366 motherboard you have I can check the compatible cpu list and maybe find you something that might be an upgrade.
But from everything I've read the 1366 socket is dead. No more new stuff for them. It's probably time for a 2011. And go with something like the Xeon 6C E5 2620. I's about the same speed but with more cores, more memory capability. pcie 3.0 compatibility AND MORE. What do you like to do with it? Speed or resourses?

I don't know how you are using your computer. Maybe a server computer? If your motherboard is compatible with X5650 (6 core cpu). Four of them are available for $370 each at eBay now (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Xeon-...3QN-/221178854328?pt=CPUs&hash=item337f497bb8).

Just take into consideration that the above mentioned CPU's are engineering samples, (ES), and you can only use 2 of them on a server board.
