Unambiguous and sortable. What's the advantage of DD/MM/YYYY or MM/DD/YYYY? Neither is unambiguous OR easily sortable.
Sortable within one calendar year...

DD/MM/YYYY is best.

YYYYMMDD is:

A.) in logical descending order (similar to decimal numbers)

B.) alphanumerically sortable (comes out in date order when sorted alphanumerically) when represented in a text string. (assuming you use leading zeros).

C.) easily converted to an integer.

Year, then month, then day, FTW..

Which is completely worthless.

It's either 100% sortable, or its not sortable at all.

No, that's what I'm saying. mugs' method is only sortable within 1 year.

Remember, who put that poll up?

my fave as well

That's not ISO though? I was taught to use that in all documentation at work. I still do it in most of my documents today.

I do MM/DD/YYYY because I have grown up in the US. I know I should use DD/MM/YYYY but my brain isn't wired that way. I usually use MONTH DD, YYYY anyway.

03-11-2008 OHHH GOOD it's almost out!!!

WRONG it's due out on November 3rd, god damn foreigners

its US with the messed up format. the rest of the world goes DD/MM/YYYY

Haha, when I went to France and we had to write a date on a ticket that we got to go into an exhibit. Forgetting where we were, we quickly jotted down 6-5-2007 (June 5th, 2007), and when we got to the gate they at first didn't let us in saying that the ticket was a month old. We explained how in the USA we have a habit of writing the dates in a different order, they let us in. From that point on we remembered to write out the month name to remove all confusion.

Sorts by year, month day.

Depends, but without any context I'm going with ^^^^.

I dunno if Howard had his heart set on slashies, but I only use those when I'm doing MM/DD/YYYY and prefer dashes as in the quote.

I use dd/mm/yyyy for everyday stuff but actually prefer yyyy/mm/dd.

mm/dd/yyyy is retarded and I really wish the US would change the standard format.

12MAR08. Learned it in the military and I've used it ever since. But I agree that for computer applications where things needs to be sortable, YYYYMMDD is the best.

yyyymmdd FTW. It is how I date most of my correspondence files so they are self sorting when I look at a file list.

I think for practical purposes (i.e., if you're not worried about sorting or absolute clarity) 3/12/07 is best in the U.S. The year is last, since it rarely changes, and the 3/12 is in the same order as how we say "March 12th."

Easy to read, sortable, appropriate for file and folder names. When used as files names format is self sorting.

MM/DD/YYYY. It's how we speak. March 12th, 2008 sounds much better than 12th March, 2008 or 2008, March 12th.
