I'm amazed at how many people post common things here for not-great prices. For those of you who've never heard of them, try Pricewatch and iBuyer. Two sites that will save you hours of looking for "hot deals" only to find crappy prices.

(And no, I don't work for either of them. I'd just like to have this forum dedicated to HOT deals, not crappy ones.)

It *would* be nice if some of you eager beaver deal-posters would do some research to make sure your "hot deal" is genuinely HOT, not tepid or smarmy.

I didn't think pricewatch is good at all, why? because all the crappy vendors there, most of their product is amlost all OEM products that's why its so much cheaper then retail box. Example if you get OEM CPU they don't give you fan or anything just the CPU. Anyway if you're looking for quality and trusted vendor look at PriceGrabber. BTW I do use PriceWatch sometime they have retail and its cheaper then other vendor in pricegrabber

I find the AnandTech forums to be the best place to find computer part deals... are any of these sites really any better?

Pricewatch is just a joke to me, it is populated BY THE SELLER, and half of them seem like scams (or obviously way-high shipping, "special only if you call in Monday between 2:00pm and 2:15pm so we show as lowest but really don't sell it at this price" crap). IBuyer is decent for some things like specific printers or network cards, but in general it isn't complete on the real price-flux things like RAM, motherboards, and CPU's.

I am seriously interested in the best information, I just haven't found a better solution than checking here on AnandTech a few times a day!

Actually, Pricewatch is my favorite price search engine. I don't care if some of the stuff is OEM -- that works fine for me. And the stuff that won't work as OEM, I just pay a few more and get the retail -- and usually for less than most other price search engines' lowest OVERALL price. Besides, do you really want the crappy retail fan with your CPU's? I'm putting together a top of the line TBird system (with EVERYTHING -- TBird 1.2 GHz with 266 MHz FSB, Mushkin PC2100, GeForce 2 Pro - overclockable to Ultra level (I hope!), X-Gamer 5.1, etc, etc, etc.) for $2400 -- and that's AFTER SHIPPING with NO CRAPPY PARTS. Not to mention that that's only the SLATED price -- it will most likely come down when the parts I'm looking at actually come out.

And lol about the scam thing. I've noticed that with some retailers, but most of them give you the lowest price with reasonable shipping. For those you're unsure of, just go to Reseller Ratings and see what others have to say.

And I'm not saying these sites are the be-all and end-all of online shopping. Just that they're invaluable if you really want the lowest price. Especially with Staples PM and coupon (I LOVE that!).

we use those sites to get a general idea of the retail price of the stuff we want to get/to post. if the price you got is at least 15% lower than the price on pricewatch or whatever... then you can consider it a warm/hot/super hot deal. judge yourself. the reason we are here are to get stuff below retail price.

The difference between the Hot Deals forums, especially this one, and the price search sites is this: the forums allow people to share their experiences getting REALLY low prices using tricks like pricematch+MIR+etc., rather than merely reporting low prices. Also, they are excellent for reporting usual deals, such as the 1 day only Iomega 12x10x32 deal at CompUSA, that almost no one would have seen otherwise. The forums are a clearing house for user's experiences getting incredible deals with creative thinking.
