Oasis's Definitely Maybe has Pearl Jam beat.....Ten is a great debut album but saying that Appetite for Destruction has only two good songs??...please....might as well say Ten only has Alive and Evenflow as the only good songs on the album.
GnR AFD pwn Pearl Jam any day.
Oasis sucks the big one as well. (beatles wannabes)

Green Day's Dookie was pretty good.
are you fvcking retarded? that was like their 3rd or 4th album.
my vote goes to Boston or Pearl Jam's Ten. Although I think for sustained quality from song 1 to the last song, Pearl Jam's Ten will beat any album anyone has mentioned. Yeah, so Appetite For Destruction had two really KILLER songs but the rest was filler at best and utter crap at worst.
Smashing Pumpkin's Gish is close, though. It looks worse in comparison because their later stuff was even better, whereas most of the bands in this thread never matched their first albums.
Whooaah...now I have to ask if you are fvcking retarded. The only song that may even be mediocre on Appetite is Anything Goes.

Wrong. There's actually a different version of Pretty Hate Machine that Trent Reznor recorded pretty much by himself. Same song line up and everything, but every song sounds completley different then the Pretty Hate Machine album you probably know of. This came out before any singles on the TVT label.

If your going to use that criteria, EVERY band had releases before their "major label debut". I believe that is what the OP meant - Major Label Debut. About the only exception would be when new bands form out of old bands that already had a major lable debut - ie Pearl Jam's Ten was preceded by "Apple".

"Apple" was Mother Love Bone..... NOT Pearl Jam. Only Gossard and Ament were a part of that band... no vedder, mccready or irons. Actually, to be technical about Pearl Jam... Vs. was the first album that Eddie was a part of the writing process on every song... not Ten, alot of it was already written when he auditioned.

If you read my post, it says the exception is when a new band forms out of an old band. MLB had a major lablel debut, then two members formed PJ. That is why PJ has no releases before Ten.
BTW - Ten was written by gossard and ament with eddie doing the lyrics. So, they are still more or less MLB w/o Andy. PJ has had like eight drummers now - the drummer is not really part of PJ.

I'm not using that criteria for the very reason that you stated, but it was stated that the single came out before the album and you know what, that's true for about 99% of the groups out there. It's just a dumb thing to say. But either way, pre major label and post major label, both NIN debut albums were still Pretty Hate Machine. It's not like the album that came out before Pretty Hate Machine was a different album. It wasn't. It was just the same album recorded at a different time.
