It's The Doors - The Doors.

I'm surprised no one has voted for The Ramones yet.

I like Gang of Four - Entertainment! too.

Slim Shady LP remains my favorite CD beginning to end and was Eminem's first mainstream release, although he had made "Infinite" two years earlier.

Bjork - Debut

She's simply elegant

And she owns everyone because the topic of this thread is the name of her album!

Boston's "Boston" -- It may be short on songs but it's great start to finish

Pearl Jam & Van Halen had great ones as well.

Boston: Boston 1976 11th best selling album of all time, and highest début album for anyone.
16 million copies have been sold in the USA alone.

Oh my god, it took this long for someone to mention, without a doubt, the BEST debut album of all time (and one of the best albums of all time)???
Yeah if you like one song played ten different ways.
Of those 16 million copies I'm sure 12 million were bought by adolescent girls.

I'll pick Jimi Hendrix's "Are you experienced"
You say Boston all sounds the same then you vote for Hendrix? I love Hendrix but I don't understand that...

Because of this thread I purchased Ten by Pearl Jam and the title album by Rage Against the Machines.

I am not a music afficianado, and certainly not well knowledged in music before late 90's, cept for Beatles.

I would ask about a few I didn't see, though may have been mentioned. I am in no way implying these are good albums as I don't think I've listened to them much. Just curious as to how well they match up.

Metallica
Coldplay - Parachutes
Soundgarden
Korn
Third Eye Blind - title (this is an excellent album?! where is its recognition?)

Debut albums I do like, but won't bother comparing them to others.
Counting Crows - August and Everything After (excellent like someone said, but I don't see it as any better than the rest of their stuff. I find all their albums pretty equal in quality.)
Maroon 5 - Songs About Jane
The Postal Service

Led Zeppelin
Journey
Return to Forever
Kansas
Inner Mounting Flame (Mahavishnu Orchestra)
all kick those posers from GnR's ass

hmmm...slightly shifted according to what I've been listening to lately

the shins- oh, inverted world
Iron & wine - the creek drank the cradle
beth orton - trailer park
wilco - AM (though there is the prior uncle tupelo thing)

then there's a whole host of amazing solo debut albums from people who grew their legs in bands, lou reed, peter gabriel, stephen malkmus...

Great taste you have there!

I will add Jeff Buckley's "Grace", although if you want to get technical he never completed a second album (yes, I know his greedy mom is going the Tupac route with "new material"). Grace is a must-own for people who love music.

 agreed. Buckley as well as costello would have to be up there on my list too.

John Mayer - Room for Squares (I like Heavier Things better though)
The Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium (Not counting the At the Drive-In thing)
Rooney - Rooney
The Starting Line - Say It Like You Mean It

Some more that I like:

Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun
Modest Mouse - This is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About
Nick Drake - Pink Moon

All awesome albums, except 1 & 3 are not debuts. Sigur Ros's debut album was called Von. Nick's debut is Five Leaves Left.

Bah I dunno why I put the Nick Drake one there, shoulda known. I coulda sworn Agaetis Byrjun was their debut though, but apparently it was just their US debut. Still great stuff though, and a  to VW for getting me into folk music.

i'd have to go with appetite for destruction or boston. both great albums that i still listen to (okay so i was in diapers when boston came out, but still a great album).

To be truthful I had forgotten all about Boston's debut. (Prolly because they waited 15 years or more to release a follow up.)

am i missing something?

boston - 1976
don't look back - 1978
third stage - 1986
walk on - 1994
greatest hits - 1997
corporate america - 2002

Hendrix debut wasn't a bunch of teenybopper tunes like Boston's.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Big Brother & The Holding Company's "Cheap Thrills." The debut of Janis Joplin. One of the best rock or blues albums ever made, and live to boot.
